Who will you be for Halloween? Whether your desired look is high-flying, power-wielding, old-school witchy wearing Halloween contact lenses —or just plain badass, Halloween provides endless inspiration. It evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns,  and festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats. People light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Trick-or-treating is an inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration.

People believe that on Halloween ghosts come back to the earthly world and if they leave their homes, they will encounter ghosts. Therefore, to avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people wear masks, Halloween contact lenses, and costumes etc. so that the ghosts will make mistake them for fellow spirits.

Halloween originates as a pagan festival; it is one of the United States first and longest running nature spirituality festivals. Celts believed that on the night before the New Year, magic is most potent and spirits can make contact with the physical world. The boundary between the world of the living and the dead becomes a blur and the ghost of the dead returns to earth. Therefore to keep ghosts away from their houses, people keep bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from entering.

What people do

Halloween is usually celebrated by family, friends, and co-workers. Parties and events may be planned in the weekend or on October 31. Adults can celebrate by watching horror films, holding costume parties or creating haunted graveyards or houses.

Many children dress up in fancy dress, wear scary Halloween contact lenses visit other houses in the neighborhood. At every house, they ask for sweets, snakes or a small gift. If people don’t give them they threaten to do some harm to the residents of the house. All this happen in a friendly spirit with no nasty trick is being carried out. This is known as playing ‘trick-or-treat’. Therefore if your children are the part of the trick, it is important either you accompany them or check their treats and make sure they are safe to eat or play.

If you are at home, it is a good idea to carve lanterns with scary faces out of pumpkins or decorate your homes and garden in Halloween style. Traditionally these are intended to ward off evil spirits.  In order to please the little spirits in your neighborhood, it is a good idea to have a bowl of small present or sweets to offer to anyone who knocks your door.

As children play trick-or-treat on Halloween night, some of them even carry small cardboard boxes with the UNICEF logo on them and collect coins instead of the candy. This is one of the causes, associated with the Halloween, collecting donations for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and help needy children across the globe.

Soul Cakes

The tradition of dressing in costumes, hiding eyes using scary Halloween contact lenses has both European and Celtic roots. During the festivals, poor citizen bags for food and families give them pastries called “soul cakes” in returns for a promise to pay for the family’s dead relatives.

The distribution of the soul cakes was encouraged by the church and the practice which was referred to as “going a-soul” is eventually taken up by the children who visit in their locality house and be given food and money.

Black Cats

Halloween is the day when people filled with mystery, magic, superstition. It is always been a holiday and begins as a Celtic end-of-summer festival during which people felt especially close to deceased relatives and friends. The dining table is the ideal place to set for the friendly spirits, people left treats on the doorsteps and along the side of the road as well lit the candles for the loved ones so they can find their way back to the soul world.

Halloween ghosts are depicted as fearsome, malevolent; customs are scary and superstitious and many people believed that witches avoid detection by turning them into black cats.
