Buying Car Insurance? Read This First!
by Avinash Mittal BloggerAre you planning to car
insurance? Well, most states in the US require drivers to carry minimal insurance.
But things can be challenging if you are doing it for the first time. Not sure
where to start? Here are a few steps to buying car insurance in Florida:
How Much Car Insurance Do You Need?
Figuring out how much each type
of car insurance coverage you need is one of the most challenging parts of
buying auto insurance. You’ll have to familiarise yourself with the different
parts of the auto policy:
Liability coverage covers the
cost if there is an accident, damage property or cause injury to someone with a
vehicle. Liability insurance is needed in most states.
The personal injury protection
covers the medical expenses if you or any of the passenger is injured in the
car accident. It also covers the related costs e.g. wages.
Uninsured or underinsured
motorist coverage is meant to cover the costs if you are in an accident that’s caused
by a driver who doesn’t have the insurance or whose insurance can’t pay for the
entire damage caused.
Should you consider the collision
coverage? It covers the damage to the vehicle after an accident, irrespective
of who was at fault.
If you choose comprehensive
coverage, it will cover any damage that can happen when it is not being driven.
The damage can be from the extreme weather, failing objects, flood, fire or
there is damage due to vandalism and theft.
Gap insurance provides the cover
if the car faces complete damage. The insurance pays out the difference between
the actual cash value which includes the depreciation and any amount that you
still owe on a car loan or the lease. In this way, you are not stuck in making
payments on a car that you no longer have.
Then there are additional
coverage options. You can opt for roadside assistance which covers things like a
flat tire, towing, and new car replacement coverage. It pays for a replacement
if the new car is sufficiently damaged within one or two years of purchase.
You should also look for car
insurance requirements in the state. Every state has a minimum insurance
requirement, but keep in mind they are a very starting point for deciding on
how much coverage you are going to need.
Get the Quotes and Decide
Once you know how much car insurance Florida you are going to need, get the quotes
from various channels. Once you have a few quotes, compare them on the features
that they provide. Keep in mind that it is good to have high coverage limits
for the must-have coverage. The quotes may include coverage that you may not
need at all, so look carefully at the various options.
Finally,
Pick the best car insurance company which meets your needs and get insured. If you are planning to replace the existing policy, wait until the coverage has started before cancelling the old policy. You can cancel the old policy and start the new one on the same day.
