Boost Your Lash Health with Natural Mascara

by After Glow Cosmetics Best Organic Makeup Products

Long, luscious lashes are beauty goals by almost any standard. The eyes are windows into the soul, and they are often a face’s most beautiful and expressive features. Emphasizing the eyelashes can go a long way toward boosting the entire look of the face. While almost any mascara can get the job done, some will do more harm than good over time. Your mascara should nourish and strengthen your lashes, not wear them down. Natural mascara can add volume while enhancing, not diminishing, the eyelashes.

Prevent Health Problems with Natural Mascara

Many cosmetic products contain synthetic chemicals and ingredients that can harm the wearer over time. For example, carcinogens in cosmetics are major problems that may contribute to the development of cancer later in life. Mascaras often contain suspected carcinogenic preservatives such as Parabens or formaldehyde to extend shelf life. Placing these chemicals on the eyelashes, directly next to the very delicate mucus membrane, can lead to these chemicals entering the bloodstream through the more exposed membrane of the eyes.

Another ingredient commonly found in nonnatural mascaras is aluminum powder. Mascara might include aluminum as a colorant. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) lists aluminum powder in its database with a moderate-to-high hazard level due to the risk of neurotoxicity. Long-term exposure to aluminum powder around the eyes can limit the body’s ability to excrete mercury, an important detoxifying process.

Other potentially harmful substances in traditional mascaras include Retinyl acetate, Coal Tar dyes, synthetic dyes (FD&C and Lake Dyes), Petroleum-based ingredients, Thimerosal, Phthalates, and the vague, catch-all ingredient “Fragrance.” These substances can interfere with the body’s natural processes at a mitochondrial level, cause organ damage, and lead to health problems such as headaches, rashes, and eye irritation. Switching to natural mascara can reduce how often you expose these potentially irritating substances into your body, leading to a healthier, happier you.

What to Look for in Your Natural Mascara

With a natural, you should be able to recognize all, or at least most, of the ingredients on the label. Natural mascara will contain ingredients that are good for the eyelashes and are easy on the body. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient on the label, odds are it is synthetic and potentially irritating. Instead, look for these healthy, natural ingredients:

Natural almond or sunflower oils. Good oils can strengthen and lengthen lashes the healthy way, instead of contributing to thinning and eyelashes falling out.

Pure minerals. Instead of synthetic FD&C and Lake dyes and coal tar, natural mascara will use more natural forms of pigmentation like Iron oxide minerals and micas to add pigmentation and color naturally.

Avocado and other nourishing ingredients. It’s important to nourish your natural eyelashes. Your mascara product should contain nutrients like avocado or aloe vera to achieve a beautiful look without causing damage.

Botanical blends. The addition of plant and botanical blends can work to nourish the tiny hairs in your lashes for long-term strength.

Why layer on harmful substances that may damage your lashes when natural products exist as excellent alternatives?Safer mascaras can mean stronger, healthier, and more beautiful lashes over time. With the right natural mascara, you can nourish your lashes and enjoy a better look naturally. Someday, you may not need mascara at all, your natural lashes will be long, strong, and voluminous all on their own!
