Blocked Fallopian Tubes-Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

by Indira IVF Indira IVF Center For IVF, IUI, ICSI Treatment
Introduction

The fallopian tubes stand as two thin tubes in a woman. They are located one on each side of the uterus and are helping to lead the mature egg from the ovaries to the uterus. When a block appears in the fallopian tube, the way for sperm to reach the eggs along with the path to the uterus for the fertilized egg gets blocked. It is also regarded as tubal factor infertility. It has been said that blocked fallopian tubes is the cause of infertility in about 40% of an infertile woman and can take place in one or both sides.

When ovulation takes place each month, an egg gets released from one of the ovaries. After that, the egg travels from the ovary through the tubes and then into the uterus. In order to reach the egg, sperm requires swimming their way from the cervix through the uterus and fallopian tube. Generally, fertilization happens while the egg is traveling through the tube. If there is a blockage among any or both of the fallopian tubes, the egg doesn't get able to make its way through the uterus and sperm can't also reach the egg, preventing fertilization and pregnancy.

Blocked Fallopian Tube Causes

Pelvic adhesions and scar tissue are two of the causes by which fallopian tubes can be blocked. There are different types of factors by which they can be caused. The first one is endometriosis. There can be a build-up of endometrial tissue in the fallopian tubes and blockage can take place. On the outside of other organs, endometrial tissue can also cause adhesions that can result in blocked fallopian tubes.
Another thing is a pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause scarring or hydrosalpinx. Even past ectopic pregnancy can scar the fallopian tubes. If there is a past surgery and particularly on the fallopian tubes, there can be pelvic adhesions which block the tubes.

As we said that blocked fallopian tubes are counted as one of the common causes of infertility. If both of the tubes are completely choked, there are almost no chances of pregnancy without treatment. If they are partially blocked, a woman can potentially get pregnant. But remember, the risk of an ectopic pregnancy amplifies. The reason behind this thing is that it proves to be tough for a fertilized egg in moving through a blockage to the uterus. At such times, the doctor may prefer the patient to have in-vitro fertilization depending on whether a possibility is there for the treatment.

Blocked Fallopian Tube Symptoms

Though, it has been examined that no exact symptoms are there regarding blocked fallopian tube. But one of the main signs can be infertility. Many women don't get an idea of whether they contain blocked fallopian tubes until they get pregnant and have problems. There is a particular type of blocked fallopian tube known as hydrosalpinx due to which there can be an unusual vaginal discharge and lower abdominal pain, but not all women have such types of symptoms.
Though, there are some other causes blocked fallopian tubes that can lead to other problems like endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease. They can be responsible to bring painful menstruation and painful sexual intercourse. But the fact is that such types of symptoms don't essentially point towards blocked fallopian tubes.

Blocked Fallopian Tubes Treatment

There can be help of laparoscopic surgery regarding the treatment of blocked fallopian tube. In some cases, this method can be useful to open the blocked tubes or removing scar tissue which are creating problems. Though, the success depends on different factors like age, condition, place, and cause of the blockage. A successful pregnancy will be more likely when the blockage seems to be near the uterus. There will be low success rates if the blockage is towards the end of the tube and near the ovary.
Help can be taken from procedures like IVF  that involves taking fertility medicines to excite the ovaries. After that, with the help of an ultrasound-guided needle wall, the surgeon will retrieve the eggs from the ovaries directly. Then the eggs will be put together with sperm from the male partner. Eggs will then fertilize and embryos result. A healthy embryo will be opted and then transferred to the uterus.

Ectopic pregnancy has been described as one of the common complications of blocked fallopian tubes and treatment. Surgery which eliminates part of the fallopian tube can also have an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. Due to such risks, doctors often recommend advancing towards in-vitro fertilization for those having blocked fallopian tubes that are otherwise healthy.
