Compulsory Registration Scheme came into existence in 2012, formulated by Department of Information and Technology jointly with Bureau of Indian Standards to fulfill the need of quality electronics and IT products to the consumers of India. BIS has placed various products in the list under Compulsory Registration Scheme those are crucial for consumers and can adversely effect the consumer's health if they are not up to the mark in terms of quality standards. It is mandatory for the manufacturers of electronics and IT products to obtain a BIS license for uninterrupted manufacturing, importing and selling their products in the Indian market. If a manufacturers fails to obtain a BIS license before releasing their products for public sale, it will be considered as a criminal activity and could result in huge fine and imprisonment. BIS regularly conducts raids in the market and seals the substandard products without the required standard mark on them.
