by Ronit Roy Health Educator & Consultant

Birth defects are some of the medical conditions that are present since the time of birth itself. Some are quite severe in nature and posses a great threat to the child, while some can be corrected in time. Cleft lip and palate are 2 of the most common birth defects. Timely reconstruction and cosmetic surgery can correct these defects permanently. Let’s understand it, with the help of a case study.

Mr. and Mrs. Biswas came to a shock when they saw their newborn was missing most of her upper lip. The frightened couple was informed that their newborn has a bilateral cleft lip. Upon further examination, she was also diagnosed with a minute cleft palate, which was no surprise as a cleft palate is quite common with cleft lip, especially if it is a bilateral cleft lip. After the checkup, the doctor suggested waiting for some time to perform the lip surgery, as they hoped the cleft palate might resolve on its own.

Together they decided, that even if things did not improve after a year or so, they would do one more examination and settle the date for the surgery. In the meantime, their parents were given specific instructions to care for her, particularly to feed her. As time specific time passed, the child was brought back the doctor and upon investigation, it was found that indeed the palate was reformed and they went with the decision to go for the surgery for the cleft lip only. The parents were scared as they were not sure regarding ti results and feared the child will have a large scar for the rest of her life.

However, the doctor ensures the best result. Indeed the surgery was s successful and the doctor also showed other picture of some former patients and how the stitched often dissolves completely without leaving any ugly scar. The delighted couple is now living a happy life with their child who is making a speedy recovery.

These cosmetic surgeries are often considered as risky by the parents who know very little about it. However, these surgeries are extremely safe and effective. In fact, in case the pediatric surgeries are availed on time, by the time the child reaches adulthood, the scars almost fade completely. It is wise to consider to these medical remedies for any birth defect.
