Best Ways to Pack Your Custom Cardboard Box

by Dillon Patterson Article Publisher

You’ve designed a custom cardboard box that reflects your company’s brand and is sized just right for your merchandise. Your customers are placing orders, and you need to send everything out as quickly as possible to keep everyone happy.

Now what?

Whether you are sending out a monthly subscription box or you need to ship products customers have purchased from your online store, having the right box is only one piece of the puzzle. You also need to know how to properly pack that box to ensure that everything arrives at the final destination intact. You also need to understand what packing materials to use and how you should use them to avoid increasing your shipping costs.

If you’re new to sending out shipments, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Don’t panic, though. We’ve come up with some of the best ways to pack your custom cardboard boxes. Just breathe and continue reading to discover some valuable advice.

Know What You Are Sending

Before you start filling boxes, it’s important to know exactly what you are sending and how that may impact what you need to do. Some things, like t-shirts and books, are easy. Just place them in the box, tape it up and you’re good to go. Other items, though, are a bit trickier. If you are sending fragile items, you’ll need to consider packing materials that will help them reach their destination safely. If you’re sending something potentially hazardous, like an electronic device that contains a lithium battery, you’ll also need to familiarize yourself with the regulations for shipping dangerous and hazardous materials.

Fill Boxes Carefully

For this blog post, let’s assume that you aren’t shipping anything liquid, hazardous or perishable that would require specialized shipping procedures. Instead, you are sending out one or more “normal” items using a box that has been customized for your business.

When filling your box, start with a layer of bubble wrap, air pillows or even crumpled newspaper. Next, add your items, putting the heaviest ones on the bottom. Wrap any fragile items in a layer or two of bubble wrap. Pack the box as tightly as possible and use air pillows or other materials to fill any voids. This prevents items from bumping into each other and the sides of the box while in transit. Before sealing the box, gently shake it to make sure the contents don’t move around too much.

Seal Using the Right Tape

Not all types of tape are created equally. There are several different types of tape on the market, and many of them are specially designed for specific applications. When sealing cardboard boxes for shipping, it’s important to use high-quality shipping or packing tape. Things like gift wrap tape, masking tape and duct tape are not appropriate for this application. You can find packing tape at office supply stores or a packaging solutions business.

Close the box’s small flaps first, followed by the larger ones. Do not interlock the flaps as this diminishes the strength of the box. When applying tape, do so in an “H” shape. Run a strip of tape along the long ends to join them, then place tape along each end to create the “H” shape. Make sure both the top and the bottom of the box are taped in this manner to ensure maximum strength.

Apply Labels

All packages should be labeled with the customer’s address as well as a return address. Generally, the return address should be placed in the upper left corner and the customer address should be centered below. If you are sending items that are breakable, affix “Fragile” labels. You may also need to add labels for special services, like Priority Mail or Express Mail. Such labels should be placed above or to the left of the delivery address.
