Ayurvedic treatment for inherited polycystic kidney disease

by Gaurav Srivastava Digital Marketing Manager

Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited disease in which sac-like membrane called cysts get developed within the kidneys.  The cysts get filled with fluid thereby causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose their functioning. Therefore, in order to cure inherited polycystic kidney disease, patients should depend on ayurvedic herbs.

Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited disorder in which clusters of membrane primarily get developed at the lining of the kidney or within them. This sac-like growing causes the kidneys to enlarge and lose their functioning over time. However, the cysts are non-cancerous and can be treated with inherited polycystic kidney disease in Ayurveda.

Polycystic kidney disease varies according to severity and with the help of lifestyle changes and ayurvedic treatment this genetic disorder can be eliminated from the body.

Symptoms of polycystic kidney disease

In polycystic kidney disease, most patients do not develop any symptoms until they are 30 to 40 years old. However, as the old, the noticeable symptoms that should not be overlooked are:

·         Back o side pain

·         Increased size of the abdomen

·         High blood pressure

·         Blood in the urine

·         Infections in the kidneys or bladder

·         Severe headaches

·         Fluttering in the chest

High blood pressure is the common cause of any kidney disease and the inherited polycystic kidney disease treatment should focus on treating the underlying cause of kidney damage.

Diagnosing PKD

·         To know how your kidneys are functioning, ultrasound is the common thing that a doctor does. If the ultrasound does not show any signs of PKD and you are at risk of PKD, then probably you do not have PKD.

·         A CT scan and MRI are also conducted to detect smaller cysts in the body that cannot be detected with ultrasound.

·         To some patients, genetic testing is also recommended, because of uncertain diagnosis in the imaging tests.

Types of PKD

PKD passes in the families through genes which are the basic elements of heredity. Just like genes determine characteristics such as hair color, body, and eye color, they also can determine the occurrence of a disease. The two prominent types of inherited polycystic kidney disease are:

1.      Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease

Signs and symptoms of this type of PKD grow usually between the ages of 30 and 40.  In ADPKD, only one parent needs to have the genes in order to pass it to the children. If one parent has the gene, then there are 50% chances that a child will have this disease as well.

2.      Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease

The less common form of PKD than autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. In this form of PKD, the signs and symptoms appear as soon as a baby is born. Unlike ADPKD, this form of PKD requires both the parents to have the genes, in order for the child to have it. If parents have a gene, then there are 25% chances for the child to have it.

Ayurvedic treatment for inherited polycystic kidney disease

There is no definite cure for treating polycystic kidney disease, however, with the help of ayurvedic medicines, you can slow down the progression of cysts inside the kidneys. The ayurvedic treatment to cure PKD includes restoring the cells of the kidney and improving its overall health. Since it is a genetic disorder the ayurvedic treatment will work on eliminating the disease completely from the body so that the condition can be prevented from passing to other generations,

Prevention of PKD

If you have inherited polycystic kidney disease and you are planning to have a child, a genetic counselor can guide you about the risk of the same condition to the offspring.

Further, it is necessary to keep your kidneys as healthy so that the complications of kidney disease can be prevented.  Some preventive measures include:

·         If you are a blood pressure patient, then one of the best things you can do is manage the blood pressure level in the body.

·         Maintain a healthy weight

·         Take a low-salt diet, preferably avoid table salt

·         If you are a habitual smoker, then quit

·         Cut down alcohol intake

·         Aim to exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes daily
