Avalon airport receives international status; boon for local economy says mayor

by Theindian Sun Indian Magazine in Australia
Wyndham City has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that Avalon Airport will receive international status.

Wyndham City Mayor Cr Peter Maynard said the move would be a boon for the local economy.

“This decision recognises the growth of Melbourne’s West and Geelong. Over the next 30 years this region’s population is expected to grow from 835,000 to 1.8 million people,” Cr Maynard said.

“Allowing Avalon Airport to link with AirAsia will be a major catalyst for investment, jobs growth and tourism in the region for decades to come,” he added.
As Melbourne’s air traffic continues to grow; Avalon Airport is well positioned to service Melbourne’s West—Victoria’s fastest growing region—as well as Geelong and surrounding regional areas. The development of Avalon Airport is likely to encourage high-density employment industries to locate in Wyndham, as well as growing the region’s visitor economy.

“A recent study by Ernst & Young into the benefits of the Werribee Park Tourism Precinct found that it generated more than $224 million towards Victoria’s economy every year. “Creating an international airport in Avalon will only build on this momentum and continue to make this region a hotspot for tourism,” Cr Maynard explained. “We thank the Federal Government for listening to the advocacy of different organisations on this issue, including Wyndham City,” he added.
