Asus ZenFone 7 Series: Flagship with Flip Camera

by Emma Justin SEO Excutive

Asus has made a comeback in the smartphone market with its recent launch of the ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro in Taiwan. There are a lot of things to get excited about here, but what stands out about the series is, of course, the motorized flip camera module that flips from the rear to the front. The flip mechanism seems to be a significant improvement over the previous ZenFone. Let’s look at some of the key highlights of the ZenFone 7 lineup, as mentioned in the press release by Asus

Screen

Asus ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro come with identical screen size, measuring at 6.67-inches. The screen resolution is kept at 1080p. Yes, it is a full HD display only, but you don’t feel as if you are missing out on something. In the fast-paced market where every smartphone hacker is trying hard to push the boundaries of giving more pixel density in the smartphone screens, Asus seems to be sticking with the idea of focusing on what is really important in terms of functionality to the users. The 6.67-inch display is an OLED panel that comes with a 90Hz refresh rate. We’re glad that Asus hasn’t disappointed us in the screen refresh rate department. Everything on the 90Hz panel feels extremely fluid, which is supported by the well optimized and improved ZenUI 7.

Hardware and Performance

The main differentiating factor between the two newly launched ZenFone models are the processors they come with. ZenFone 7 packs in the flagship Snapdragon 865 chipset while ZenFone 7 Pro comes with the overclocked high power variant, Snapdragon 865 Plus. Both of these are flagship-grade processors and are currently the best ones you can get. The Snapdragon 865 Plus chip is often said to be even better than Apple’s A13 Bionic chip, which was considered to be the industry leader when it came to performance. The ZenFone series are made with premium quality material. It is a glass and metal build, and Gorilla Glass is used for front and back protection. The base model, ZenFone 7, comes in two RAM variants, a 6GB one and an 8GB one with 128GB of internal storage on both. The more expensive ZenFone 7 Pro comes with a single RAM option of 8GB, along with 256GB of storage.

Camera

As mentioned earlier, the camera is going to be the key highlight of the ZenFone 7 series. The flip camera, although it seems a bit too out of the box for some, but it seems that users are now starting to develop a taste for the tech. Moreover, the best part of such a design is that it makes a lot of sense. Asus was able to notice that only one camera module is used at a given time. It makes total sense to have a living camera mechanism so that there is no need for voting different camera models in the back and in the front. The flip camera system is also good for the manufacturer as only a single camera module is being used; it can help the manufacturer to cut costs and price the phone aggressively.

ZenFone 7 series will come with a 64-megapixel primary sensor from Sony, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens which is capable of 3x zoom, and a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide Lens that offers about 122-degree field of view. This three-camera module is the shared camera unit for selfies as well as for rear photography. As good as it sounds on paper, the real-world performance of the camera should be no exception. The selfies from the front will be significantly crisper and will have more dynamics than the offerings from the competition. The motorized flip camera mechanism is also significantly improved from the offering of the previous ZenFone 6. Previously it was tested for 100,000 flips, but now the flip mechanism is tested to last for a cycle of 200,000 flips, double to that of the previous mechanism. Asus has mentioned that it will take almost five years for the flip mechanism to wear out if the user performs about a hundred flips per day.

Battery and Charging

Another thing ZenFone series is known for, apart from the flip camera system, is, of course, the massive battery life offered by the series. Asus ZenFone 7 series does not disappoint in this regard; it comes with a huge 5,000mAh battery that promises reliable battery life. Combined with the meticulous software optimization and the super-efficient flagship Snapdragon chip, users should have no complaints regarding the battery life in this series. To juice the 5,000mAh battery, Asus is going to provide a 30 Watt fast charger in the box. Charging can also be considered an upgrade from the previous ZenFone as it only came with an 18 Watt charger. Even after being a flagship, ZenFone 7 misses out on having wireless charging support. This may not bother every single user, but some users do expect wireless charging since they are purchasing a flagship device.

The big question arises relating to the availability of the series. As of now, the smartphone is only available in Taiwan. Asus has confirmed that it has plans to launch the series in European markets by September. There is no official confirmation about the launch of the series in the US market yet. Pricing of the series can be termed as “reasonably competitive.” Converting the Taiwanese currency into USD, we get the price tag of Asus ZenFone 7 at around $749 and the ZenFone 7 Pro at around $949
