Application of Metallized Polyester Films

Polyester film metallized with aluminum powder is called PET MET. PET is already known for its high strength and surface hardness and especially with regard to the diffusion density. These favorable properties can be improved through the use of aluminum powder. For packaging applications demanding very high barrier performance and good metal adhesion, metallized polyester films are developed. The product is protected throughout its targeted shelf time with the high barrier, whereas the high metal adhesion ensures high lamination bond strength.

Some countries have already replaced traditional aluminum-laminated packaging by metallized flexible plastic packaging. Substitution is more concentrated in some product categories such as tomato based products, powdered milk and coffee. And this migration trend from aluminum laminate to metallized films continues globally. In fact, it follows a quite strong trend: the substitution of rigid packages for flexible packaging, especially for pouches.

• With metallized PET film you can achieve a stronger mirror effect. This is also used when printing – for example, without a white primer, yellow color shimmer gold.
• For snacks packaging, PET met foils are ideal. Thermoform able container covers such as yogurt cups or refill bags for cosmetic products are made out of metallized PET. Coffee and pet kibbles remain dry in those PET packaging and retain their full aroma and flavor for a long time.
• In the particular case of acidic, alkaline or salt-containing foods, metallized PET films are a perfect substitute for aluminum foils, as a longer exposure or a large contact area of aluminum with those materials can release potentially harmful emission of aluminum into the edible content.
