by Vikas Singla Best Gastroenterologist in Delhi

Endoscopy is an extremely common medical procedure. With the help of an endoscopic procedure, doctors and physicians look inside the body of their patients through a cavity or a hollow organ. Unlike many other types of imaging techniques, endoscopes are inserted inside the human body directly. The experienced endoscopists in Delhi and other metros efficiently use this procedure in order to properly examine the interiors of the patient’s gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is commonly prescribed by doctors for evaluating and investigating diverse medical symptoms, including:

                    Chronic diarrhea

                    Digestive tract bleeding

                    Blood in the urine

                    Infections

                    Ulcers and difficulty in swallowing

Unexplained bleeding in the digestive tract

                    Unusual vaginal bleeding

                    Gastritis

These symptoms may be caused by a number of medical conditions, including stomach ulcer, hiatal hernia, pancreatitis, gallstones, tumors blockage of the esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease.

Preparing for an endoscopy

Gut preparation: Examining the upper digestive tract of the body through endoscopy requires fasting for around 6 to 8 hours prior to going for the procedure. When examining the colon, it is additionally important to ensure that it is must be cleared of stool. Typically, a laxative or even a group of laxatives are given to the patients on the day before this procedure.

Sedation: A sedative is pro vided to the patients for the majority of examinations conducted with the help of an endoscope. Sedatives help in increasing the comfort level of the person undergoing the relevant examination. This sedative is typically administered via an injection into the vein of the patient, subsequently facilitating a light sleep and relaxation. As the patients are generally sedated during the endoscopic procedure, they tend to have very few, if any, recollections of it. While the patients generally wake up within an hour, the effects of the sedatives may last a bit longer. Hence, it would be prudent for the patients to not drive until the next day after an endoscopic procedure. General anesthesia, which puts the patients totally into sleep for a period of time, is only given to the patients for an endoscopy in very special circumstances. Good endoscopists in Delhi and other metros typically use general anesthesia when conducting the procedure in young children, or when there are certain complications involved in the case.

In comparison to majority of other surgical procedures, endoscopy requires much less preparation and is quite often done on an outpatient basis. The patients, however, may need to stop taking certain medicines before going for this procedure. It is important that the patients have a proper discussion with their doctors about the preparation needed for an endoscopy, prior to going through with it.

Patients typically recover much faster after an endoscopic procedure, in comparison to more invasive procedures. Many people get an endoscopy done in an outpatient facility, and go home that day or the next. The recovery time of people also tends to depend on their individual capacity, as well as the type of endoscopic procedure they may have gone through.
