American Society Of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Releases Facts And Figures On Opioid Addiction

by Alex Smith expert
In the backdrop of such a scenario where 7 out of 10 Americans (70%) are on prescription drugs, several million on opiates, the most dangerous of drugs, American Society Of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) takes the bid to release facts and figures on Opioid addiction. Being a class of drugs the illicit drug heroin as well as the licit prescription pain relievers oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, fentanyl and others, opioids are known for being able to relate and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain and nervous system as well. However, cannabis is found to be different in terms of addictive patterns and outcomes compared to marijuana. While the statistics portray that 467,000 adolescents were current nonmedical users of pain reliever with 168,000 having an addiction to prescription pain relievers, perhaps it is time to think about the freedom of choice for healthcare that one is entitled with simply by the virtue of being a human being. With the consideration that addiction is a primary, chronic and relapsing brain disease characterized by an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors, it has been estimated that 23% of individuals who use heroin develop opioid addiction. Considering that young men are the worst victim of such addiction, women are observed to become reliant on on prescription pain relievers more quickly than men.

Liberty of bodily autonomy can be ensured with the help of limited choices similar to birth control. While health and safety are considered as the secondary concern to chosen medicine, it is much about the freedom of choice that one is entitled with by the constitution.

Research shows that people often share their unused pain relievers out of the lack of awareness about the dangers of nonmedical opioid use. Furthermore it is also found that most of the adolescents who misuse prescription pain relievers are given them for free by a friend or relative.
