Tooth decay often destroys the structure of the tooth and it also affects both the enamel (the outer coating of the tooth) along with the dentin layer of the tooth.
Tooth decay generally occurs when foods which contain carbohydrates (sugars as well as starches), like bread, cereals, milk, soda, fruits, cakes, or candy are left sticking on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth usually digest all such foods eventually turning them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine and it forms plaque, which clings to the teeth. The acids in plaque then dissolve the enamel surface which creates holes within the teeth and these holes are known as cavities.
