What is a Colour Masterbatches?
As the dependence on plastic keeps on increasing, it is crucial to make it look attractive by adding colours to enhance its appeal. In order to obtain the desired colour, additives and pigments are added to plastic in various concentrations to obtain the desired result. Masterbatch is an additive present in either solid or a liquid form used for producing coloured plastics or coloured masterbatch. The additives are encapsulated to the plastic during a heat process and after cooling it is cut into desired shapes. Masterbatches are available in following variants such as additive masterbatch, black masterbatch, colour masterbatch, filler masterbatch, pet masterbatch, UV masterbatch, white masterbatch, conductive black compound and masterbatch for agricultural applications.

Advantages of colour masterbatches:
  1.     As colour masterbatches come in pellet form, it is easier to store and work rather than natural pigments.
  2.     Colour masterbatch is designed for optimal dispersal in a polymer matrix as it enhances the colour of the plastic.
  3.     The binding agents used in the masterbatch can be matched to the polymer that is used in the plastic to improve the melting process.
  4.     Masterbatch allows achieving better opacity and transparency of the coloured product.
  5.     Masterbatch is versatile as they deliver a variety of products with enhanced capability such as UV stability, optical brightening, and flame retardants.
  6.     They are very cost-effective, easy to use, dirt free and eliminate health risks due to the absence of powdered pigments.
  7.     As the colour ratios are predetermined before the mixing process, the chance of error becomes less.

Should liquid or pellet form be used in Colour masterbatches?
As we had discussed earlier, colour masterbatches can be obtained by using liquid or solid additives. When it comes to narrowing down an option, solid additives fare much better when compared to liquid pellets. Liquid additives should be used in extremely low quantities. Liquid additives are good for long term production and can lower production costs. However, the drawback of using a liquid additive is that they can cause screw slippage and the colour may separate if not mixed properly. Solid pellets produce zero waste and are very easy to work with when compared to liquid additives. By using solid additives, we can eliminate the hidden costs such as hoses and tube sets that are required for liquid additives.
