All You Need to Know About Guinea Pig Care

by Ryan Patrick Advertiser
Guinea pigs are highly social animals that can make excellent pets for a number of reasons. These rodents have tiny teeth and do not have the tendency to behave in an aggressive manner like many others in their species. This means that a guinea pig is a right friend for your children to have. They are loud and playful which may be a positive for some households while others might prefer less boisterous pets. Their diet consists of commonplace food articles like carrots, leaves, and the occasional guinea pig food pellets. Here is a list of things you need to know about guinea pig care.

Fresh water from a nip

Guinea pigs are highly playful – especially in groups – which means your pets will always be running around and heating themselves up. This combined with the largely fibrous diet they eat makes it highly necessary that they constantly drink fresh cool water. One obstacle to this is that guinea pigs are not capable of lapping up water from flat dishes like many other animals. Thus, to make sure they have the necessary cooling their system requires, you need to attach a rubber nip in their shelter. You can easily find one with any guinea pig breeders.

Springy hay for the shelter

Guinea pig adoption centers have numerous shelters for the pigs that are always filled with hay. While you may consider these ornamental since the pigs rarely even eat the hay, this is a misconception. Guinea pigs are not wired to thrive and move over granite, marble and gauze surface that your floor and their shelter may be made of. Their tiny claws might get stuck in the gauze or the delicate bones in their legs deformed because of the stone. To save them from such a fate, it is important that you put fresh springy hay in their cages on a regular basis.

Variety in food

How would you like it if you were made to eat the same dishes over and over on a regular basis with no variety? Guinea pigs are similar to humans in their love for different foods. This is not just a desire, but a necessity for the all-round nutrition of your pets. A consultation with guinea pig breeders can help you chalk out the diet for your pigs. Majorly, the diet should consist of carrots, green leaves from cabbage, lettuce and cauliflower and fruits to a small extent.

Social patterns and interaction

The area around a guinea pig adoption center will never be quiet; the guinea pigs revel in the simple enjoyment of each other’s company. As such, it is important that you observe the interaction of your guinea pigs and their lively activities. The first signs of trouble in your pigs emerge through dying down of this excitement and an overall reduction in their energy. If such a situation persists beyond 18 hours, it is advisable to take your guinea pigs on a trip to the vet.
