All about Storage Tanks: Specifications, Features and Types

by John Steffen Consultant
Storage tanks are containers that can hold liquids as well as matter in gaseous state. It is used as a reservoir to store materials. The storage tanks provide two major usages. One is to provide volume for storage and other helps in the distribution process.

The acid storage tanks and chemical storage tanks are usually cylindrical in shape with floating roof. Some are perpendicular and some are parallel to the ground. There are many environmental rules and regulation regarding the design and operation of those tanks. These rules are different for different fluid depending on the nature and the effects of using the fluid. Even the regulations are different for the tanks placed above the ground and the tanks below the ground. The tanks are installed and functioned strictly keeping in mind the industry standards and rules. The above ground tanks usually store petroleum, chemicals, water and various other hazardous materials.

There are various types and shapes of tanks available in the market. Some tanks are horizontal or vertical, open top or closed top, flat bottom or cone bottom, huge size or small. You will get in different sizes and shapes depending upon the usage. The closed top water tanks are commonly found in urban regions. Large tanks are usually vertical with rounded corners which make them withstand extreme pressure of liquids that contains hydraulic acid. Most tanks are designed to handle extreme external pressure. Some large tanks are mounted on a truck or lorry which will be called as tanker.

Special Features of these special tanks are:
  • These tanks are made with utmost care and consideration. Because liquids can evaporate or spill even through the smallest openings. Keeping in mind the safety standards, a containment dike is build over the tanks preventing any leakage that might happen.
  • The tanks should be protected from corrosion in order to prevent the harmful effects on the environment. Sand bitumen mix finish is used to support the tanks to keep the bottom free from water, hence preventing corrosion.

Different types of Storage Tanks available:
  • Industrial Fuel Storage Tanks
These tanks are also known as petroleum tanks and can store numerous fluids. These industrial fuel storage tanks are usually used to store organic and non-organic liquids.

  • Industrial chemical storage tanks
They are made to store fertilizers, fluids, gases and other chemicals. These storage tanks are available in different shapes and sizes.

  • Oil storage tanks
These storage tanks store oil on a temporary basis especially during the time of processing of oil products before it is used or consumed. These oil storage tanks are made in different types keeping in mind the safety and environmental regulations. The different types of tanks are either made of steel, stainless steel, concrete and plastic.

  • Industrial Gas Storage Tanks
The industrial gases are supplied in gaseous as well as in vapor state. Liquification of gases is done in order to convert the gas into a liquid state. The materials in gaseous state are supplied in the form of compressed gas.

  • Industrial Plastic Storage Tanksv
Water storage tanks are required for domestic, industrial or commercial purposes. Plastic water tanks are one of the best ways to store water. Since they are light weight, durable and consume less space, most of the consumers prefer plastic storage tanks.

  • Industrial Water Storage Tanks
These tanks are used to store various types of liquids like diesel, kerosene, oil and others. These storage tanks are available in different shapes depending upon the purpose.

The industrial tank manufacturers and users should follow safety regulations in order to maintain a safe and secure environment.
