All About FUT Hair Transplant
by Andrew Martin Health ConsultantHair
fall is one of the most sensitive issues among all cosmetic concerns. Hall fall
could be a normal phenomenon when only 50-100 hairs are shedding per day which
is easily counterbalanced by new hair shaft formation routinely. Hair loss is
referred to outnumbering of hair fall than formation of new hair shafts. There
are multiple contributing factors of hair loss but the biggest culprit to be
blamed is one: Genetics. Beside the multiple factors causing hair loss, the
permanent solution is only one “hair
transplant surgery.”
Hair
transplant has come a long way with the recent innovations in this field. The
day has come when with hair transplant one can achieve best aesthetic results
for lifetime. The hair transplant procedure involves harvesting of hair
follicles from high density donor area including scalp or other body parts and
shifting them by implantation at the recipient bald area.
The
steps of hair transplantation include:
1. Administration
of local anaesthesia in donor as well as recipient area
2. Graft harvesting from donor area (mainly from back
and side of head or any body part depending on the availability of density of
hairs)
3. Preparation
of implantation site by hair transplant surgeon
4. Implantation
of grafts at the desirable recipient site
5. Post
operative hair wash for removal of clots after 24 hours
Hair graft harvesting techniques:
There
are 2 modern hair transplant techniques differentiated on the basis of graft
harvesting methods explained as follows:
1. FUT hair transplant
(Follicular unit transplantation or strip technique): This technique is
performed by harvesting of a strip form the scalp which is then dissected to
extract individual graft. These dissected grafts are then implanted at the
recipient area where covering of baldness is desirable.
2.
FUE
hair transplant (Follicular unit extraction): This
technique employs the solitary extraction of each follicular graft from the
scalp with the help of a surgical device. These grafts are then implanted at
the desired bald recipient area.
Each of these techniques has indications and limitations which have to be taken care of while opting for one as per the patient’s requirement. The techniques are opted based on the area of baldness, age of the patient, gender of the patient, number of follicular grafts required and quality and quantity of hair follicles at the donor area. Each technique has certain flaws but collectively advanced FUT hair transplant technique has added advantages over FUE technique.
Benefits of FUT hair transplant technique:
·
Choice of technique for
advance cases:
FUT hair transplant technique is recommended when there is
larger bald area to be covered and higher number of grafts required.
·
Higher number of grafts
obtained:
FUT technique is
recommended when approximately 3000-3500 grafts are required.
·
Shaving of head can be
avoided:
With this technique there
is no need to shave the head completely and only the donor area is shaved which
can be easily covered with the existing hairs. In females, priority is given to
no shave procedure and it is avoided completely.
·
Less damage to hair
follicles or less follicular transection rate (FTR):
FUT technique offers least
damage rate as each step is done under high magnification which increases the
visibility and offers keen detailing of surgical site. Hence, this technique
offers least damage rate of <1% if performed by skilled hands. Dr Suneet
soni has expertise in performing FUT
and has done thousands of cases with this technique offering best assures
results.
·
More DHT resistant hair roots can be achieved:
FUT technique is recommended in cases of higher number of grafts
requirement as it offers provision of extraction of more number of grafts DHT
resistant safe donor area which are permanent roots.
·
Donor preservation for long term benefits: As in FUT technique thin strip of scalp is harvested, it offers the
provision of future sittings as donor site is preserved.
·
Almost invisible scars with trichophytic closure: Scarring was known to be the only big disadvantage of FUT technique
but now with aided advanced technique of trichophytic closure we can achieve
the almost invisible scar as FUE technique.
Disadvantages:
This technique has major advantages to
offer with few manageable disadvantages described as follows:
·
Short hair style could be
avoided:
Crew cut hairstyle could offer minimal
visibility of scar.
·
Big set up of clinic is
required:
FUT technique requires a big set up, a
well equipped OT and more manpower which could cost a clinic on higher side.
·
Requires only skilful
hands:
This technique is bit more complicated
and expert hands can only deliver successful results so care should be taken in
choosing the right hair transplant surgeon.
