Ain Difficult Times – the Internet as a Support System

On Life’s Hard Gig:

With all the turmoil and tribulations that seem to constitute the very essence of modern industrial life – a life divorced from the carefree sojourn provided to the weary traveler by nature (a concept epitomized by the Romantic-age literary luminaries within their highlighted works) – it is not hard to appreciate the magnitude of difficulties that uncannily weigh down on individuals striving to persist in the world today. Indeed, the sight of people cursing at their dismal fortunes, at the overwhelming degree of inequality between the ever-increasing ‘have not’ and ‘have’ global demographic factions, and at the rigors of war, disease, poverty, and hunger that collectively manage to rip apart the very fabric of society, comes as a lived, everyday experience for many. Economic anxieties fuel sociological discord (a state-of-affairs which often emerges from the microcosm of a broken home affected by deprivation), and the inevitable competition for resources amidst a rising population base causes individuals to behave erratically from their normal, calmer selves. Thus ensues a vicious cycle of a psychological angst predicated on a seemingly hopeless, mundane reality – culminating in a grim series of circumstances that leave individuals feeling dejected, unfulfilled and unappreciated for their struggles. For such people, the Internet (particularly the services offered by customer-friendly ISP’s such as Spectrum Internet, among others) provides a safe haven where they can congregate safely and interact with their contemporaries battling against the same existential predicament. Furthermore, it allows them to vent and seek anonymous support for their anguish in a calm and productive manner.

Then Suicide it is:

The greatest manifestation and proof for the ‘grimness’ of these times that we are currently inhabiting comes in the form of the rising suicide rates the world over – a de facto facet of modern existence that hints at the underlying mental states (of consciences craving for some attention, and affirmation of their subjectivities from others) of individuals who choose to carry out this grave and final exercise of essential self-mutilation. The WHO, according to befrienders.org, estimates that the global incidence of suicide is expected to increase by a factor of over 200% by the year 2020. In addition to the macroeconomic issues that intrinsically seem to perpetuate this growing epidemic further, sociological factors such as the waning influence of religion on populations (particularly in the developed world; with the developing nations fast catching onto this trend), and the breakdown of communal (family/tribe/clan/ideological group associations) living in the favor of an aggressive and virulent form of individualism continue to contribute heavily to this new-age quandary. Several online support groups, such as 7 Cups of Tea, Mental Health America, Healthful Chat, and Therapy Tribe (among others) are addressing this chronic threat of depression-induced suicide head-on – by providing free and targeted psychotherapy and counseling services to the afflicted through their high-speed Spectrum Internet packages.

The Vulnerable Young:

The population groups deemed to be the most ‘at risk’ from the threat of suicide include adolescents and young adults – with this being the case due to a variety of not-hard-to-fathom reasons. Impressionable minds are easy hosts made particularly susceptible to the effects of misfortune and deteriorating circumstances, and the escalating pressures of trying to make-ends-meet for ensuring even a basic standard of existence. These setbacks may include such traumatic experiences as troubled childhoods, poor academic or social performance, unemployment, personal un-fulfillments, the tragic demises of loved ones, as well as a whole host of other related issues that impact the mind adversely. Young people do not possess the rigid coping mechanisms of their more weather-beaten adult or senior counterparts on the age-scale, and in the case of not finding any neat solutions to their varied life-problems (which they might perceive to be extreme; something a more experienced individual may not) – they might resort to taking their own lives as a way to resolve all of their woes. Such a situation is often compounded, of course, due to the unavailability of a mature and empathic parent or guardian, who might (with wisdom and foresight) attempt to ward off the victim from willingly throwing hi/herself under the proverbial bus of fate.

Some Hope around the Corner:

Nowadays, many psychologists and counseling experts use the internet as a platform for offering their free and voluntary services to the suffering. These services can take the form of employment arrangements with established mental health institutions, or pro-bono work initiated on an as-needed basis. Spectrum Internet remains the number one choice of many healthcare professionals working in the field with patients (ill, both physically and/or mentally), and through its hacking-proof networks, allows for high-speed virtual interactive sessions that result in saving the lives of many suicide-contemplating individuals.

Several commercial entities, such as Spectrum  through its CSR initiative, have devised Spectrum bundle deals which include a number of internets, Cable TV and Digital Phone plans at affordable rates – so that in the absence of proper support systems, patient-sufferers of psychological disorders always have some therapeutic entertainment resources at their disposal; to ward off those occasional bitterly felt blues, whenever they should strike.
