AGILE: KEEP YOUR CAREER AND PROJECTS ON TRACK USING THE AGILE FRAMEWORK
by TheKnowledgeAcademy LTD Lead Training ProviderTraditional project management has grown up focused
on typical engineering projects where the final product to be delivered is
scoped, designed, built, tested and executed – in that order. This is ok if the
customer knows what it needs precisely and the number of changes is relatively
small. This paradigm is not so effective if the project is a quest to attain an
objective and everything changes routinely.
Agile project management is a methodology ideally
suited for developing projects where an iterative approach is essential to
refine understanding and deliver value early, typical in many software and
other ‘soft’ projects.
Because an IT process involves people, technologies,
and a variety of other environmental factors, all of which are subject to
change, it shouldn’t be viewed as having a static definition.
People learn,
technologies evolve, and business conditions change constantly. You want to be
in tune with these changes and tap into the opportunities they present.
The agile project
management processes that you execute in your organization are likely to change
over the years. As your staff becomes more skilled and your understanding
deepens, you should take the opportunity to enhance your processes. However,
it’s imperative to note that the basic principles don’t change, only your
interpretation of them.
In Agile project management method, planning is more
rationalized and focuses largely on addressing dependencies. Specific areas of
focus include:
• Assembling the right team and ensuring that
training requirements are addressed.
• Allocating meeting rooms for conducting JAD sessions
and making sure that they’re sufficiently equipped.
• Procuring the products and services that the
project will depend on (e.g., computing resources, software licenses,
third-party services).
• Setting up suitable environments for development,
build, system test and later on, production.
• Organizing access to the appropriate systems to be
worked on by the project team.
• Organizing version control tools, environments,
and processes.
•Recognizing points of contact for external
dependencies, communication channels, and escalation procedures.
• Publishing an initial draft project plan. The
project plan will be an evolving entity and never set in concrete. Avoid
breaking down tasks to a low level of detail (e.g., expressed in hours). The
dynamics of the project will make micro planning meaningless.
• Organizing project review meetings.
Good project management practices are as vital in
agile as in traditional projects.
Attendees with Agile training would discover how
your projects can easily and successfully make the transition to an effective
Agile environment. Agile is an effective tool for use in delivering projects
where the outcome is unsure. Whilst created as a software development
methodology, many of the ideas can translate to mainstream project management.
The knowledge academy helps organizations define the
difference they aim to make by connecting their mission, organizational
culture, vision and values with best practices and processes. It strengthens
leadership and management capacity organizations by providing training workshops,
custom designed on-site training, and direct assistance consulting in all
aspects of management.
