Aesthetic Treatments Singaporean Men Are Getting

by Andy Cheng Director

In this day and age where women expect to be treated equally as their male counterparts, men should also be allowed to undergo cosmetic treatments and wear makeup.

Many women pamper themselves by undergoing cosmetic procedures such as laser treatments, Botox, dermal fillers, and even thread lift to look youthful, vibrant, and well-rested. Men should not be neglected. They should not frowned upon when all they want is to maintain their youthful appearance for a longer time.

We talk to Dr. Siew Tuck Wah of Radium Medical Aesthetics to give us some details on some popular non-surgical treatments his male clients seek to achieve a more youthful appearance.

What are the main skincare issues your male clients have?

Dr. Siew: Just like any female clients, male clients are also concerned about aging-related changes such as wrinkles, sagging skin, pigmentation, and acne scars. However, men are generally more fixated on treating certain conditions that bug them. Some examples are pigmentation, acne scars, or eye bags rather than achieving smoother, fairer skin.

What are some common skincare issues your male clients are coming to you for?

Dr. Siew: Younger men in their 20s are often plagued by oily skin and acne. Many of them have stubborn acne that keep recurring in the same place due to overactive sebaceous glands.

I get a good volume of male clients who want to treat their acne scars and hyperpigmentation caused by acne. Bad cases of acne scarring and hyperpigmentation can cause embarrassment and emotional stress on a person.

Whereas older men wish to retain their masculine features. Some of the common treatments they ask for include thread lift and other skin lifting treatments that can help achieve a more defined jawline.

Can you name some common procedures that are popular among men?

Dr. Siew: Acne and acne scar treatments are the most popular treatment among males in my clinic. The most effective acne scar treatment is Fractional CO2 laser. For people who suffer from recurring acne, the most effective acne treatment is to use AGNES to destroy the oil glands.

Males tend to have stronger facial muscles and deeper wrinkles. Dermal fillers and botox remain one of the most versatile and safest treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. However, I have clients who request not to overfill or totally remove their wrinkles as it makes them look more mature and masculine.

Many Singapore men lack the mark of masculinity with a deficient chin and ill-defined jawline. Singapore men will not hesitate to correct them because the lack of a defined jawline and chin make them feel that a large part of their youth is lost. A popular way to treat this among my male clients is a combination of thread lift and dermal fillers. I usually use Silhouette Soft Thread Lift to perform thread lift treatment. It is a dissolvable thread with bi-directional cones that anchor and pull excess skin upwards to lift and reposition them.

What other treatments can men do to reverse signs of aging?

Dr. Siew: I am a firm believer of providing a natural-looking outcome for my male clients. As a start, laser treatments and chemical peel are great for erasing signs of aging such as fine lines and pigmentation. Lasers and chemical peels can also help to stimulate collagen synthesis with very little downtime.

A good way for male clients to combat general signs of aging is to give Rejuran Healer a try. It is a non-surgical treatment that repairs damaged skin by using polynucleotides derived from salmon to boost collagen production and encourage cellular renewal.
