Acute Liver Syndrome-The Hepatic Failure

by Carson Martin Medical Consultannt
Generally, liver disorder develops over a few years and is chronic in nature. Contrary to this, acute liver failure occurs rapidly, signaling progressive loss of liver functions. Many a times, this condition is triggered without any apparent cause.

It is a medical urgency and can be reversed with proper and timely treatment. However, many a times, liver transplant is the only option.

Symptoms:-

1.Jaundice

2.Nausea and Vomiting

3.Pain in upper right abdominal area

4.Sleepiness

5.Inability to concentrate

6.Disorientation

Causes:-

1.Acetaminophen overdose: - Acetaminophen overdose is the most common cause of liver failure in US. Overdose or taking dose for several days may cause the damage. The damage is greater in persons who are already suffering from chronic liver diseases.

2.Prescription medications: - The disorder can be caused by certain prescription drugs like antibiotics, anticonvulsants and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

3.Herbal medications: - Some herbal medications and supplements like skullcap, kava, pennyroyal and ephedra are also associated with this disorder in some cases.

4.Viral Infections: - Viral infections in form of Hepatitis A, B and E can weaken the liver and lead to its malfunctioning. Other viruses like Epstein-Barr virus, herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus may also cause this condition.

5.Toxins: - Exposure to some poisonous toxins may cause acute liver failure.

6.Autoimmune diseases:-An autoimmune disease known as autoimmune hepatitis causes inflammation and injury to liver tissues. This may lead to impairment of functioning.

7.Underlying conditions or diseases: - Underlying conditions or diseases like Budd-Chiari syndrome can causes blockages in the hepatic veins leading to its failure.

8.Rare metabolic diseases: - some metabolic diseases like Wilson's disease and fatty liver during pregnancy may cause liver to fail.

9.Cancer:-cancer that occurs in liver or occurs in liver but spreads to other parts can cause this disorder.

Complications:-

1.Excessive fluid in the brain (cerebral edema):-Excessive fluid in the brain may exert excessive pressure in the brain. The brain tissues may get damaged and displaced outside the space. It may also deprive the brain of oxygen.

2.Bleeding disorders: - The blood clotting factor is also produced by liver tissues. When the liver is malfunctioning, the production of clotting factor also gets reduced causing gastrointestinal ulcers to bleed more rapidly. In case of any injury, the blood doesn’t clot quickly.

3.Infections: - People who are diagnosed with this disease are at higher risk of developing respiratory tract and urinary tract infections.

4.Kidney Failure: - It is the extreme case of Liver failure which causes damage to both Liver and Kidneys. It is usually caused by overdose of acetaminophen.

Prevention of Acute Liver failure:-

1.Limiting alcohol intake

2.Dose of medications as directed

3.Healthy diet

4.Avoiding poisonous mushrooms

5.Vaccination against hepatitis infection 6.Maintaining healthy body weight
