The head of the FBI and the leader of Britain’s domestic intelligence agency on Wednesday raised alarms about the Chinese government, warning business leaders that Beijing is determined to steal their technology for competitive gain.

By China as well as the Chinese government’s efforts to stifle dissent abroad, FBI Director Christopher Wray reaffirmed previous concerns in denouncing economic espionage and hacking operations.

His speech was important in fact because it took place at MI5’s London headquarters together with Ken McCallum, agency’s director general, in an intended show of Western solidarity.

To Wray and the FBI regard the Chinese government as not only a law enforcement and intelligence challenge, but are also accommodated to the implications of Beijing’s foreign policy actions, the remarks also showed the extent .

The biggest long-term threat was posed by the Chinese government. We consistently see our economic and national security, and by ‘our,’ I mean both of our nations, together with our allies in Europe and elsewhere”, said Wray.

The first time leaders of the FBI and MI5 had shared a stage for a joint speech described by the officials. The Chinese government and its covert pressure across the globe amounts to the most game-changing challenge we face said by McCallum. Apart from this, he also said that, “This might feel abstract but in fact it’s real and pressing,” In other cases, “We need to talk about it as well as we need to act.”

In Washington, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy did not immediately return an email seeking comment. Wray said that any forcible takeover of Taipei by Beijing would represent one of the most dreadful business disruptions all over the world has ever seen.

“We will never encourage, support or condone cyber attacks, according to the statement. In a nod to current tensions between China and Taiwan, during his speech Wray also said that any forcible takeover of Taipei by Beijing would “identify it as one of the most horrific business disruptions worldwide. This type of disruption has never been seen in the world.”

Last week the US government’s director of national intelligence said that there were no indications Chinese President Xi Jinping was poised to take Taiwan by military force. Xi appeared to be planning for that potential action as part of a broader goal of reunification of Taiwan said by Avril Haines.

Wray said that after the appearance with his British counterpart he would leave to others the question of whether an invasion of Taiwan was more or less likely after Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

Apart from this, he also said that he doesn’t have any reason to think their interest in Taiwan has let up in any fashion,” by adding that he hoped China had learned what happens as he said that the Russians have done in Ukraine “when you overplay your hand”.

There are signs the Chinese, perhaps drawing lessons from Russia’s experience since the war, have looked for ways to insulate their economy against potential sanctions, the FBI director said.

Wray said that we call that behaviour a clue in our world. Throughout this speech he also urged caution from Western companies who are finding to do business in or with China. He said in the event of an invasion of Taiwan western investments in China could collapse.

On the other hand, he also said that, just as in Russia, Western investments built over years could become hostages, capital stranded/supply chains and relationships disrupted.

The Taiwan issue was purely China’s internal affair, the country has “no room for compromise”, when it comes to questions of China’s territory and sovereignty” said by the embassy spokesman.

Both the heads of the FBI and MI5 have shared a public platform for the first time”, according to McCallum’s statement. This can be usually done to send the clearest signal on a massive shared challenge: China.”

The statement said that “We will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts,” as it is noted that China will reserve the option of taking all important steps in response to the interference of foreign forces.
