AAFA American Image Awards 2015

by Eckart Duane fashion&beauty

An eclectic group gathered on the Upper East Side on Monday night for the 2015 American Apparel & Footwear Association's American Image Awards.

This year, the annual event benefited Mercy Ships — a nonprofit organization that sails a floating hospital to poor countries throughout the world to provide free medical treatment to those in need — and attracted a crowd of fashion designers and retailers, reality TV stars, actresses, models and more.

At the event, which was hosted by actress Debi Mazar; fashion designer Cynthia Rowley was honored as Designer of the Year, Brooks Brothers chairman and CEO Claudio Del Vecchio was named Person of the Year, Holt Renfrew president Mark Derbyshire accepted the Retailer Brand of the Year award; Brown Shoe Company CEO, president and chairman Diane Sullivan accepted the Company Brand of the Year award and Kelly Osbourne took home the Fashion Maverick prize.

While on the red carpet before the ceremony, Osbourne talked about how honored she was to be receiving an award and how she couldn't stop looking at everyone else's outfits, which seems fitting given her former role on "Fashion Police."

"I love being in New York. It's such a different fashion world than it is in L.A.," she told us.

Iman Obou, also known as Miss New York 2015, said she was most excited to see Osbourne.

"I watch 'Fashion Police' all the time, and she's my favorite. She has really great points and a really edgy fashion perspective. She's one of the most iconic people in fashion," she told us.

"I'm so honored to be amongst some of the most prominent people in the fashion industry. I'm looking forward to meeting the honorees and congratulating them for their great creativity."

While Obou praised Osbourne's edgy personal style, she said she typically sticks to more conservative looks.

"I'm very Sophia Amoruso — the Girl Boss. I'm an entrepreneur, so I try to stick to long dresses. I'm very modern and sophisticated," she told us.

I recently visited Valentino. I really fell in love with their accessories. I've always really loved Chanel. I love to see their collections and their runway shows. In terms of regular brands, I go for Zara," she said of her favorite brands.

Other guests at Monday's event included Mercy Ships founder Don Stephens, Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," Lea Black of "Real Housewives of Miami" and model Brie Harding among others.
