A Small Town Love Affair, in Konkani Style!

My profession as an Indian classical dancer, Kathak to be more precise, has always taken me to places that I had never even thought of. Especially in a diverse country like India, there are so many beautiful little towns which are unheard of but are extremely beautiful.

Other than just performances in the auditoriums, I teach too. It is very tough for me to run a permanent institute at the moment, because of my traveling for the concerts. If I can’t promise my students for a 3-day class in a week, it doesn’t make any sense to have an institute at the moment. I would rather love to teach while I travel for my performances. Having such a situation, I thought of getting connected with the SPIC MACAY, an organization that promotes art and culture among youth, and works at it from the ground level, that is, educating not just the urban children but also taking care of the small town children.

It was one time, that SPIC MACAY decided to send me off for a series of workshops to Ganpatipule. To my denial and ignorance, I had never heard of this place. I had to google it to know which state it was in. After a little internet knowledge, I got to know that it was a small town in Ratnagiri districts on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra.

My workshop series was scheduled for 5 days. I was a bit sceptical about the arrangements that SPIC MACAY had made for my stay at Ganpatipule, as it was a small town. But to my surprise, everything was nicely done here. Rather, way better than I had expected and assumed. My stay was in one of the best resorts in Ganpatipule. The rooms were spacious, had a lot of light coming in, it had all the basic amenities required, and the best thing about this resort was the staff. They were very warm and very simple people.

I have always been a little particular about my hotel accommodations. I believe that if the stay is good, then the work for which I have come to visit the city or town can be done without any hindrance. My 5-day workshop went off extremely smoothly. Children here were very loving and were enthusiastic to learn about Indian classical culture. Rather, I found them sharper than the city kids.

I was in love with this small town, its greenery and beautiful touristic spots. My friend, who was here at Ratnagiri city, came to see me for a day. She told me that the resort I was staying in, was better than some of the hotels in Ratnagiri city.

My 5-day trip ended and I had to come back to Delhi with a lot of memories that I collected from Ganpatipule.
