A Discourse on Diabetes, Smoking and the Risk of Gum Disease

by SmileStone Dentistindia Best Dentist in Delhi

Our gums are one of the most vital aspects of our oral structure and it plays a crucial role in beautifying our smile and ensuring the effective functioning of our teeth. We have to ensure that we take good care of it. Gingivitis happens because of the presence of a bacteria called Plaque as a result of which the bleeding and inflammation of the gum occurs. It is the superficial form.

Gingivitis then progresses to the next level known as the Periodontitis. This involves the bone around the teeth to dissolve. This means that the teeth gradually become loose and then eventually they are lost.

How can you detect if you have Periodontitis?

The thing about Periodontitis is that it does not hurt. So what happens is that the patient’s bone gradually dissolves and the patient hardly has any idea about it. In fact, it is even quite difficult for the dentist to find out until it becomes too late for the periodontist.

A Periodontist is, however, trained to find out the signs of the ailment and intercept it while it can be still treated. That is why it is advised that everyone should check with the Periodontist to find the signs of this disease while it is still treatable. This especially recommended to the diabetics and smokers.

Who is more prone to periodontitis and How?

Most of us have a strong immune system that protects us from the plaque bacteria. That is why Periodontitis does not happen to everyone.

Neutrophil is one type of immune system that plays a vital role in protecting against this form of bacteria. When this immunity does not work too well then individuals are more prone to periodontitis as they are more susceptible to the dissolving of the bone around the teeth resulting in losing the teeth subsequently.

Why neutrophil does not work well in certain people’s gums is still not known. But it is seen that diabetics and smokers are quite prone to it.

Diabetics and smokers are unable to cope with the same plaque level in their gums and teeth that other people are capable to do. As a result of that, they must remove the plaque bacteria more meticulously than the other individuals and this way their weakened immune system has much lesser amount of work to do.

Just like patients with diabetes are unable to manage their sugar level, they are also not able to cope with plaque. Other people may be walking around with plaque without even knowing. Their immune system is working fine to protect their teeth.

But with diabetics and smokers, plaque must be handled efficiently and should be kept to bare minimum as their immunity is weakened and they are unable to cope with it.

So if you are a smoker or have diabetes and are concerned about having gum disease then you should consult your periodontist without any delay. Even before going for dental implants in Delhi, it is recommended that you get a thorough oral check-up so that once the implants are fitted, you do not face any problems.
