A Comprehensive Look at the Fitness Equipments in India

by Catherine Diaz Health Experts
A couple of years ago, the Trade Commission of Italian Embassy in New Delhi had conducted an extensive survey on the Indian Fitness Equipment Industry. In its findings, it was noted that the country has witnessed a significant paradigm shift consequent to the change in the life-styles of middle and upper-class families.

It was also observed that surging work pressure has resulted in stress related ailments, rampant amongst the people with white-collar jobs, the corporate executives in particular. Hence the awareness on the value and necessity of being fit and healthy in life has spread.

According to this study, the industry was still fragmented with diverse players such as health clubs, gyms and trainers. Yet within a span of four years, the fitness equipment market grew almost five-fold from 12.5 billion rupees in 2010 to over 63.4 in 2015.

The gym equipments in India has two main segments such as –

Cardiovascular Equipments -
  • Treadmills
  • Stationary bicycles
  • Stair climbers
  • Rowing machines
  • Elliptical cross-trainers also known as X-Trainer

Weight Training Equipments -
  • Weight lifting machines
  • Barbells
  • Benches, bars and racks in different varieties

Certain trends in the trade and industry of fitness equipments were also mentioned in the survey including spa set up in India. Among these was the one pertaining to health chains making their foray in equipment retailing. On this score, the Mumbai-based Talwalkars had already ventured into this activity with success and at the time of this study, it had even planned to sell fitness equipments by opening 50 stores in shopping malls.

On the topic of systems of foreign brands, the survey noted that these products are routed through distributors or importers in India. A foreign company usually appoints a master licensee to market and distribute the brands either directly or via sub-dealers. There have been several tie-ups with foreign manufacturers. For instance, various New Delhi-based companies have tie-ups with Hammer Strength and ‘Celebrate Life Flooring’ the study had revealed. In a nutshell, it projected a bright future for the industry in the country.

Indeed, today the fitness industry has a huge growth potential as hardly 2 to 3 percent of the urban Indian population regularly practices physical training workouts although mega corporate groups have in-house gymnasia for the staff members.

As for the current popularity and utility of the fitness aids, the elliptical machine has shown gainful signs vis-à-vis the other conventional systems in both the residential or home and institutional segments. In residences, the widely used equipments are treadmills, exercise bikes and mini multi-gyms.

The elliptical system is a stationary exercising machine meant to stimulate walking, climbing, and running. It provided a total body workout, dispersing the effort to your legs and arms, you can burn more calories with less perceived exertion than other cardio machines, even more than other lower-body only elliptical machines.

The institutional segment (health clubs, gymnasia and corporate houses) is bulk buyer of these systems. The equipments (treadmills, plate loaded fitness kits, dumbbells and plates) here are more sturdy and costlier as compared to the ones used at homes.
