A bitumen emulsion is a combined mix of water and tiny droplets of bitumen. Bitumen is a petroleum-based product. Hence, it does not mix completely with water. It has a sticky composition and hence it does not disintegrate easily into finer droplets. To solve this issue an emulsifier is used. An emulsifier is a surface active based agent which helps the bitumen maintain itself in its tiny drops and not get mixed up with other droplets.
