8 Tips For Safety With Rotary Cutt

by Shauna Allen I'm Shauna Allen from USA

As an online quilt shop owner, I recently participated in the Calhoun County Illinois Quilt Program. A woman in the neighboring stand recently had an injury with a "rotary cutter". His story was as such; He was trying to finish a project and placed his rotary cutter open on the ironing board. You guessed it, she threw it and fell on her leg making a nasty cut. She chose not to see a doctor, which her listeners considered a mistake but instead continued to breastfeed and heal the wound. I must add that the wound was still bleeding. This brought war stories from his listeners. They all had a similar story to tell.

His story reminded me of my friend who also dropped an open rotary cutter on his foot. This time the cut was too severe to ignore. The Doctor who attended the emergency room was horrified by the wound and the depth of the lesion: several tendons were cut.

My friend produced the rotary cutter and the doctor could not believe that she was in possession of such a lethal tool. The wound was cured, however, the tendon damage was significant and left her with permanent damage.

In no way advocate by pulling the rotary cutter. As quilters, we know the value of this tool. However, I think we should be aware of the importance of safety first-and implement that idea in our quilting process. Every instructor I know has included in your instructions, and be sure to close the rotary cutter after each cut.

Use the following tips and do not suffer accidents:

1. Wear shoes while cutting your fabric. Keep a pair on the table only for this use.

2. Close the rotating blade after each cut, it into a habit.

3. Keep out of reach of children: buy a box of school pens and place a rotating blade after each cut.

4. Keep a safety kit near the cutting board: Place an auxiliary table for the pencil box and the safety kit.

5. Stay focused when cutting, this means turning off the TV.

6. Invest in grips to keep your hands away from the cutting tool.

7. Always cut away from you.

8. Copy this list and it on your desktop as a reminder-security first.

Take security first one step further and make similar lists to include security in your everyday life.
