8 questions you should ask child modelling agencies

Everybody knows that child modelling agencies have the knowledge and skills to improve your child’s modelling career. There is however 8 questions you should ask every prospective agency.

1)   How does the agency help my child? The person in the agency you have the discussion with should be able to give you a detailed description of exactly how the agency works ah how it can help to make your child’s modelling career easier and better.

2)   How much commission do they charge?  Commission percentages vary from agency to agency. It is important that the child modelling agencies you contact do not charge too much commission, as you need to take travel costs and other requirements into consideration as well. A fair commission percentage is between 10 and 20%

3)   Do they have talent managers on the staff and will my child have access to one? A lot of agencies do have talent managers on their staff but it is not always the case. A talent manager has a lot of industry related expertise and can help your child to further their career by suggesting additional classes and possible career moves.

4)   IS the agency able to help you smooth out and understand contracts? The legal department of some child agencies has a person specifically trained to liaise with models and clients regarding contracts. The legal liaison or talent manager will be able to assist you with any contract queries and misunderstandings.

5)   Can they advise you on preparing your child for a shoot? There are child modelling agencies out there that will assist you in preparing your child for the shoot. Some will be able to lend you additional wardrobe items, while others will give you advice on how you can prepare your child?

6)   How does the payment work? You need to know if the client will pay the agency and the agency then pay you your part, or if you get paid by the client and then need to pay the commission to the agency. Pick an option that suits you best. Going back to the agency after a shoot might mean extra travel costs.

7)   What does the agency do to help me protect my child? Most child modelling agencies research their potential clients to ensure that they are legit and do not intend to harm the child or risk their safety. Some agencies even goes as far as adding a safety clause into the contract with the client.

8)   What are the additional costs involved? It is important that you find out what additional costs you have to cover, be it classed or portfolio photos or travel costs. By knowing the additional costs you will be able to determine if the whole modelling idea can be a viable source of income. The child modelling agencies should be able to give you a rough estimate of additional costs and requirements if you wish to sign with them.
