7 Myths About Home Solar Systems

As more residents make the move towards solar energy systems, the number of misconceptions regarding this form of Eco-friendly energy source also grows in number. There are many arguments that opponents of the technology will make and a large number of them are unfounded. If you are someone who is wondering about what the truth of the matter is or even more important, if you are deciding whether a home solar system is a viable option for you or not, then you need clarity on a few issues.

You might have heard that solar energy is unreliable, as it cannot be used during nighttime. There is no arguing against the fact that solar panels cannot perform their function without a light source. However, most of them are able to generate far more electricity than the average home can use up in the daytime, even in times when excessive energy is being used. You then have the option to either store this excess energy or route it back to the main grid. In most states, you will get credit for this energy or receive monetary reimbursement.

Often, you will come across the opinion that solar panels are awkward and ugly. This is a no-brainer; new and innovative designs in solar panels are developed all the time, as a large number of architects and designers are going green. They understand the need for solar panels that are efficient, but at the same time ultra-modern and chic. In present times, adding a solar energy system will only increase the resale value of a home. Another misconception that goes hand in hand with this one is that home solar systems are difficult to maintain. This is not at all true, as most residential units have a lifespan of more than 25 years and are quite resilient.

Perhaps the most obvious of all myths regarding solar energy, is the supposition that solar panels actually add to the process of global warming. Any manufacturing process will have a carbon footprint, the production of solar panels included- but this is where it ends. Once they are manufactured an installed, solar panels do not emit any harmful elements like carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. As opposed to thermal power plants, they do not affect the atmospheric temperature by producing waste heat either.

Myth number five is that solar panels do not work in cloudy areas, when in fact; clouds do nothing to block the rays of the sun. Any number of beauty magazines will attest to this fact, by telling you to wear sunscreen regardless of whether you can see the sun or not. The fact that Germany has the biggest solar market worldwide is solid proof of the efficacy of solar panels in cold climates.

The last two myths are pertaining to the cost aspect of home solar systems. Many people put off this investment saying that it will be cheaper in the future. Whilst this is a possibility, the present incentive programs offered by the government are far too profitable to pass up on. Homeowners can save as much as 60% of the installation cost. The last myth is that solar energy is more expensive than traditional forms, but as global energy demands rise, it is strongly predicted to be more economical in the long-term.
