7 Incredibly Easy Tactics to Break Free from a Writer’s Block

by Reemi Shirsath Chief Operating Officer

For a writer, the most alarming thing to happen is to reach a block. The brain just goes blank even after writing hundreds of pages for hours and days. Yes, pretty scary right? It is not unnatural for a writer to reach a stage where they just look at the blank screen unsure what to write without any ideas occurring. This happens to every writer, regardless of the time experienced as a writer. If you are wondering what is the best way this hopeless situation, here are 7 incredible easy tactics that will help you break free from a writer’s block.

1.   Stop Finding The Right Words

At times, we reach a writer’s block because we think too much while writing. We hack through our brains just trying to find the exact right words or the perfect sentence and when nothing good comes up, we reach a block. The best thing to do is to not force it, just write anything. It does not have to make complete sense, nor does it have to be perfect. Doing this will help you be more productive as a writer and will help you understand the purpose of what you want to convey.

2.   Explore New Places

Writing in the same place looking at the same four walls of your office or home gets monotonous eventually. The mind runs out of inspiration to come up with creative ideas. Get out of your space and explore new places to write. Whether it is a neighbourhood park, library or a coffee shop, a change in place can be miraculously helpful. Make sure to carry around a notepad or a laptop that suits your needs everywhere you go. You can never know when inspiration is about to strike.

3.   Loosen Up and Take it Easy

When you find yourself sitting in front of a blank screen without any words or ideas coming in, it’s completely okay to take a break. Loosen up and take it easy on yourself. Focus your mind on other things. Run a small errand, watch some TV or brew a cup of coffee for yourself. These simple tasks will take the pressure off you, letting you relax. This will help in getting rid of the writer’s block, as the mind is refreshed.

4.   Just Keep Moving

Whether you are travelling by bus or train or simply even walking, just keep moving. Moving around and seeing different scenarios and people could be all the inspiration that you need. Sometimes, something as simple as hearing people talk is all it takes to come up with new ideas.

5.   Calm Your Mind

Stress- It is the one major thing that causes the writer’s block. Get away from stress by doing things that will calm your mind. The best thing to do to get rid of stress is meditation. Meditation clears the head and relaxes the mind and body. Even giving your mind a break and reading books or articles from famous authors who inspire you is a great way to relax. Apart from meditation and reading, activities like jogging and yoga are also a great way to let loose and relax.

6.   Understand Your Potential

Every writer is different and so are their writing styles. But what also is different about every writer is at what time they function the best to create outstanding content. Not everyone can start writing at the crack of the dawn and the same way not everyone can stay up late writing in the middle of the night. It is very important to understand what works best for you and work on that schedule to avoid the writer’s block. You can always follow a few simple tips that will keep you motivated to keep on writing.

7.   Change The Topic

In spite of doing so much and still not being able to write could mean that the topic you are trying to focus so much on does not inspire you at the moment. Instead, write on a topic that sparks an interest in you. Writing about something you enjoy might help you figure out a way to understand how to write about something that is not easy for you. Get back to the initial topic when you are inspired and ready with new ideas.

Conclusion:

As a writer, it is very common to overpressure ourselves to do better each day. At the start of a new day, every writer wants to write better than they did the previous day. All these restraints and deadlines cause stress, which eventually turns into a writer’s block. Writing comes naturally; don’t limit your writing to a particular amount of time. And sometimes when nothing works, just take some time off from writing and work on it again when you are ready.
