65,000 new Building and Construction workers needed in NZ over next 5 years

There is a high level of demand for qualified builders and construction workers to emigrate to New Zealand, to deliver the country's £66.9bn infrastructure and housing programme.

The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) has stated that New Zealand is suffering from such a huge skills shortage that the country is in need of 65,000 new workers over the next five years to meet growth and replace people who lave.

The UK construction industry has seen a recent downturn, that coupled with the uncertainty of Brexit and the promise of a great lifestyle has already seen those with key skills make the move to New Zealand.

Many local employers are working with the NZ government and local bodies to create attractive job packages that include exciting “experiences”, such as fishing, surfing and sailing.

Craig West of engineering company Downer, said: “Our construction sector is very competitive and this kind of inter-industry co-operation has never happened before but the need for staff requires us to take an all-of-industry approach.

“We’ve united to solve a big problem for all of us and we’ve come to the UK because that is where some of the best global construction talent is.”

Immigration minister Michael Woodhouse said: "These changes are designed to strike the right balance ... and encourage employers to take on more Kiwis and invest in the training to upskill them."
