6 Fatal Mistakes when Choosing a Place to Workout

by Devesh Kumar BD
1.Shop around and chose the cheapest place rather than the safest.
Fitness classes could be dangerous if not properly taught. Some important things to consider are: finding out about your instructors, their teaching experience and methods, who designs the curriculum - workouts for the students. Is the place clean? Is the area safe? Everyone can lead a class but not everyone can make you better.

2.Underestimate the environment.
Look around when you are inside a prospect school and check if you would relate to the people that train there. If the language is appropriate, what type of music do they play out loud? Men hitting on your wife, or daughter are always a concern at that place? Are they role models for?

Are you going to be comfortable with that atmosphere?

3.Underestimate the instructor knowledge and also overestimate his knowledge.
Knowledge in fitness is very important. Knowing where your instructor went to school if he did, how long has he studied in university or not at all? Is he/she certified? Is the certification legit - authentic?
Sometimes the resume is great but the instructor has no good values and morals or just don’t care about the students and their safety. So you need really to do your homework and check their backgrounds and find a balance in between knowledge and care.

4.Not knowing the difference between a gym and a school.
Usually at gyms you just rent their facility and pay for it with little to no instruction at all. At a school of fitness you will have your classes designed by the head coach with a direction to take and a culture of respect and values to follow. You might have classes at gyms but there is no direction or culture behind it. Often times, gyms hire coaches from different backgrounds and different beliefs just to entertain the attendees. Gyms tend to change coaches often and with that the culture and progression of learning can be shifted negatively.

5.Underestimating the people you surround yourself.
It is very important to know if the people that attend the training facility are there also to help you and if there is a good camaraderie and culture in there.
Many places focus solely in the results of that day or the WOD (workout of the Day). And people with less skills always stay behind and that failure leading to people quitting. Is the competition something that you like or ready for? Or is the workout competition based?

6.Outcome based training vs. performance based training.
In many places the outcome is the most important thing, so everyone is focused on that. And if the outcome is not great the motivation is not there.
The performance based training can be simply exemplified as a culture of performing better tomorrow than today, Even if that performance is poor if compared to others. The Focus is in yourself not in others.
