Many homeowners planning house extensions in Sydney do so in order to create an extra bedroom. When real estate is at a premium being able to add an extra bedroom to your existing property can be the solution to gaining space without moving.

However, as we all know, home extensions in Sydney don’t come cheap and having to build outwards or upwards may mean that the return you get should you decide to sell will be low compared to the initial investment.

On the other hand, if space is not the issue, updating existing bedrooms can often offer a positive return on your investment and give you a renewed appreciation of your property. We look at five ways to remodel bedrooms that will add value to your property.

1.       Turn an Existing Bedroom into a Master Bedroom

By utilising spare rooms in your property, it’s possible to create an impressive master suite. Think about combining two rooms into one to make one large room or to incorporate an ensuite bathroom or shower room.

If there is sufficient space, you may want to consider creating a small living area in your master suite for an extra touch of luxury.

2.       Improve Your Bedroom Lighting

In many bedrooms, lighting seems to have been an afterthought, with just a single pendant light hanging from the ceiling.

One way to bring your bedroom up to date is to add an eye-catching chandelier, recessed lighting or even retro track lighting. If you have the budget, rewiring the room to add bedside lighting will also prove to be a good investment.

3.       Improve the Comfort Level

If your flooring has seen better days, a new wooden or laminate floor or fresh new carpet can work wonders. You want your floor to feel warm and cosy, but you also want it to be safe. If you do opt for wooden or laminate flooring, a large rug can soften the feeling underfoot, or you may want to consider installing underfloor heating.

4.       Inject Character

While it’s often said that when you’re selling your home you need to make it as neutral as possible, adding character and personality to bedrooms will ensure that your house stands out from others on the market.

For example, you can create a peaceful tropical themed bedroom by installing a canopy bed, adding a ceiling fan and plantation shutters and plenty of greenery or perhaps a Zen-like bedroom with white linen, a small water feature, candles and a statue of Buddha.

5.       Add a Coat of Paint

If you are planning to sell your house, neutral colourways often work best, but that doesn’t mean to say that they have to be boring. Use on-trend colours or add a feature wall in a contrasting colour, but steer away from anything too bright or too dark.

Enjoy the End Result

Remodelling your bedrooms can be a great way to add value to your home, but always make sure that the finished result is something that you’ll be happy to live with until your house is sold.
