5 Things Truck Drivers Should Do If They Get A Ticket

by Cody Richard Marketing Manager

Being a truck driver is a totally different aspect of professional life. Here, you’re never sure where you might be on ‘that Monday’ or how much time will it take for you to get back home.

And if that is not enough, getting a ticket while doing your job can make it even worse. A ticket can impact various aspects of your life - especially financial. Thus, your first priority should be to not do any such thing that may end up getting you a ticket.

But, unfortunately, if you end up getting a ticket, don’t panic. Panicking in such a situation can affect your commercial driver’s license (which is commonly referred to as a CDL).

5 Things Truck Drivers Should do If They Get A Ticket

1. Do Not Plea Guilty In Haste

This is the biggest mistake that truck drivers do. With tonnes of pressure that starts to accumulate, the driver feels threatened.

The driver might give into the fear and plead guilty when he/she is not!

2. Write Things Down

Starting from five minutes before your alleged violation to when the officer drove off, write every detail down. This will be helpful for you in court.

Things like, what you were doing 15 minutes before the alleged violation, what were the questions asked by the officer and what was your response, how fast you were driving, and every other detail that you could remember.

Take photos of the vehicle if any ‘damage’ was done and that too in the presence of the officer.

Having as many details as possible will be useful for you while someone represents your case in court.

3. Check The Type Of Ticket

Not all tickets will lead you to the same consequence. Some tickets may disqualify you from keeping your CDL and from every applying for one again.

Thus, always check the nature of the ticket that you got.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or fleeing the scene of the accident might end up getting you a ticket for the worst punishment possible.

4. Be Respectful To The Officer

While an officer hands you the ticket, chances are, he might’ve already started recording you from the moment he stopped you.

Thus, you should always be polite and respectful to the officer. Even if you disagree, do not argue and hold your emotions back. It may end up backfiring you.

When that video clip will be shown in the court, your behavior will be examined by the judge.
