5 Steps to Writing a Great Classified Ad

by Jeff M. Writer

Classified ads have been one of the most reliable ways of getting the word out about a sale or service for many decades, transitioning very effectively from the age of print newspapers to full websites dedicated to them online.

They are very attractive to individuals and small businesses since they are usually either free or very cheap. The downside of that is the large number of ads that are usually put up on a regular basis, meaning that if you want your ad to get seen, you’ll need to make sure it’s top-notch. Here are a few tips to do just that and get the maximum mileage from your ads:

1. Get the Headline Right

Most people will form a judgment about your adjust from the way the headline is written, and you can’t blame them for trying to sift through thousands of ads efficiently. What you can do is to make sure your ad headline is clear and inviting enough for them to click on it and see what the details of your offer are. Keep it short, and make sure it conveys exactly what you have for sale, the service you offer or what you’re looking for. Most people will not bother with ads that are unclear since they don’t want to risk wasting their time.

2. Use Keywords

Are there particular names or search terms that many people use when referring to the product or service you’re advertising? If there are, you should be sure to integrate them into your ad. You can do that in the headline and in the descriptions, to ensure that your ads can feature prominently when people who are more inclined to using those names or terms search for them on the free classified ads for Los Angeles site.

3. Use Images

Human beings are naturally attracted by visual appeal, and images are a good way to take advantage of that. Your ad will stand out more and be more likely to catch the attention of anyone scrolling through the result pages after they’ve searched for something. In addition, it’ll give the impression that you put more effort and time into your ad, giving it an aura of credibility compared to ads that look like only the minimum possible effort was put into making them. Be sure to use good quality photos though, and you can add your business logo for extra visibility.

4. Be Specific

Sometimes, business owners create ads that spell out the entirety of products and services that they offer. Not only does that make for a long and tiresome ad which most people will not bother to read through, it also makes it difficult to rank for specific terms in the search algorithm. Use different ads for specific products and make their descriptions short and clear so people who open them will actually read them and quickly make a buying decision.

5. Use the Categories Correctly

Have you ever been on a classifieds site and seen a single ad across various unconnected categories? If you’re like most people, you’ll likely have been turned off by the spammy technique being used, and the likelihood of buying from that seller would have diminished. Post your ads in the correct categories and use the keywords well. Trying to cheat the system by spamming will make you lose customers and might even get you kicked off the site.
