5 Signs Your Home Has Water Damage

by Kevin Smith Author

Not all water damage in Woodstock is caused by natural disasters. It’s more common that a pipe will burst or leak, but the damage isn’t always noticeable right away. How do you recognize water damage before it becomes an expensive nightmare? The following five signs are always a good tip-off that you need to hire an expert.

There’s a Musty Smell in the Air

While most noticeable in basements and cellars, the smell of must can permeate any room in your home. When it does, you can be pretty sure there’s a moisture problem happening. If your rooms smell stale and foul, it’s best to call a restoration company to look for underlying issues.

Mold Is Building Up on Your Walls or Ceiling

After must often comes mold. Mold won’t grow without water to feed it, so finding it in your home is an excellent warning sign that you have a leak. Whether it’s toxic or not, you don’t want mold growing in your home and bleaching the area is only a temporary fix. If you don’t correct the underlying problem, it will just continue to come back which can easily lead to health issues, not to mention it looks terrible.

The Paint on Your Walls is Bubbling

Peeling paint is a good indication of leaky pipes beneath your wall. It obviously happens most in walls close to plumbing. If your paint is bubbling off the wall, a water damage restoration service can use a thermal imaging camera to look beneath it for leaks or bursts.

Your Hardwood Floors are Cupping

Wet subflooring and slab foundations may eventually transfer water to your hardwood planks, which will then begin to bend and deteriorate. If you catch the problem early enough, your floor’s water damage in Woodstock can be repaired before they are completely destroyed, but if you wait too long, you’ll have to replace the whole floor.

Your Water Bill Has an Unexplained Increase

While water bills fluctuate slightly throughout the year, if you see a substantial increase with no explanation, you may have a leak somewhere in your plumbing. As soon as you get that bill, you should call a repair and restoration expert to come investigate your system. It might be hiding somewhere you don’t normally look. With any luck, you’ll catch it early enough that the damage and costs will be minimal.

There are several warning signs that your home may have water damage in Woodstock. By knowing what to look for, you can hire a restoration expert in time to fix problems while they’re small instead of after they do major damage to your house.
