5 Important Tips to Help You Crack the GRE Exam Test

by Wisdom Mart Education Consultant
The Graduate Record Exam or GRE for short is a standardized test and the scores are used to get admissions into various graduate level institutes and business institutes in English speaking countries around the globe.

GRE is the most popular test to get admission into institutes in USA. Over one-lakh applications are received from over 150 countries for the GRE exam every year. Anyone interested in pursuing a Master’s, MS, MEM, MBA or a Doctorate should sit for the GRE exam. The test is conducted by the Educational Trust Service (ETS) and evaluates aspirants in their respective fields. There are eight GRE subject tests in total including the revised general test. There is no specific eligibility criterion for taking GRE Test. There is no age or qualification bar for the applicants of the exam. However, the criteria for individual institutes where the candidate is applying have to be met by them.

Here are some tips to help you crack the GRE exam:

1. Learn to concentrate over a long period of time:

The GRE is a three-hour-forty-five minute exam. The aspirants will have one minute between the sections and a ten-minute break after three successive sections. When an exam is as long as the GRE, it is easy to lose concentration and begin slacking off after a while. With that said, it becomes imperative to develop your mental endurance by attempting practice papers on a regular basis. If solving full-length practice papers proves to be a daunting task, try solving different sections individually until you achieve a level of comfort and then begin solving full-length practice papers.

This becomes especially important a month before the exam; this is the time you need to monitor your time and make sure you’re improving on your speed.

2. Do not neglect Quant

The Quant Section in GRE differs from the quant you are used to solving in school. So even if you were very good at math in school, do not underestimate the GRE quant, and work on it regularly. The GRE primarily tests the reasoning ability of the student, which means that most of the question you’ll see will be based on logic with twists, making it more of a brainteaser than what you are typically used to in school. Merely being aware of the concepts can land you in hot waters. A better approach is to practice regularly and figure out various tricks and patterns to solve GRE specific questions. Work smart and develop strategies that will help you on the day.

3. Learn the context of words

Do not make the mistake of spending hours mugging up the meaning of words for vocabulary. The way the GRE is set, merely knowing the meaning will not get you far. You must understand the context in which the words are used in order to ace the GRE. Try to look up sentences in which words are used and understand the context instead of memorizing the meaning; this will really help you in areas like sentence completion.

4. Work on AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment)

Analytical Writing Assessment assesses your writing skills. Even though it is not a very significant part of the whole test, it does take up a lot of time to complete. To prepare for this, try writing loads of essays for practice. Read editorials, newspapers, magazines and books on a regular basis to help you prepare for the AWA.

5. Join a good and experienced training institute to ace the test

Luckily there are GRE training classes to help you prepare for the exam. Institutes like Wisdom Mart have evolved over the years, and offer the best GRE training classes in Delhi.
