5 great ways to make staff more energy efficient in the workplace

by Alice Porter Business Writer Alice

Whether you’re a small or large company, one of the big expense issues that you’re likely to come across is keeping energy use down and cutting back on costs. It can be understandable when you consider that the amount of technology and hardware equipment that’s used in current, modern day businesses. Thankfully, there are many ways in which businesses can help to reduce energy use in their office and motivate their employees to be more energy efficient. Here are 5 ways you can do this:

Engage staff into discussions

One way that’s sure to get staff involved with being more energy efficient it’s involving them in the actual discussions about how you can reduce energy use. Involve as many staff as possible in the brainstorming process and ask them to come up with ideas to save energy. Alternatively, you could hire an energy saving mascot to encourage staff around them to do their bit.

Tell staff to open windows

If you have staff members that are located near the windows in the office, encourage them to open the blinds to let more natural light in rather than turning on the light. Particularly, during the Summer months, sunlight will last longer throughout the day which means you won’t need to turn the lights on indoors if you let it in.

Explain the benefits of what they’re doing

When notifying employees about changes being made around the office, one of the main reasons some can struggle to get on board with new ideas is that it’s not clearly explained to them why the change is being made. Therefore, they’re unaware of the benefits to their efforts and are less likely to action the changes. By informing them properly about how saving energy can benefit them and the rest of the business, they’re able to relate to the campaign better and be more careful when they’re using energy around the office.

Hold competitions

Some staff members enjoy being rewarded for their efforts and when they’re working extra hard, recognition can go a long way. So, consider hosting competitions for the team that will encourage them to save more energy around the office. It can also create healthy competition between teams and encourage other members of staff to do the same.

Create a policy

A good way to remind staff of their energy saving duties is putting out additional marketing around the office. Whether it’s stickers or posters, they can be gently reminders that will help members of staff to remember the part they can play in saving energy. You can even set up campaigns such as cycle to work schemes and recycling methods which can be easily motivated.

Moving forward…

It could be suggested that these are just short term solutions for you to save energy, but what could be long term solutions? Could you switch energy suppliers to become more energy efficient? Are you using a sustainable equipment company? Consider these for your long term energy saving plan and watch your company reap the rewards.
