5 Bible Verses for Addiction Recovery

by Blair Nicole PR, Marketing

The Bible is an endless source of inspiration, encouragement, and guidance. For those facing difficult challenges, however, the wisdom it offers can be lifesaving. These five Bible verses are especially helpful to those who are fighting against drug and alcohol addictions.

Please note that the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible is referenced in this article.

James 4:7

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Giving in to temptation is not only easy but can actually seem like a good idea. When you're tempted to relapse, your mind plays all kinds of insidious games. It will remind you of all the good times you had when you were partying or how good it felt to use. It won't, however, bring up the memories of losing the important things in your life. Resist the temptation and commit yourself to do what is right in God's eyes. With time and concentration, the desire will fade away.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

In times of temptation, pray for direction. Then, look around. God could use anything as a vehicle for His deliverance. You might suddenly receive a phone call from a friend or mentor, notice a book on your shelf that contains a timely message, or simply receive the peace of God that quiets your internal strife. What you receive may not completely cure the pain, but it will make it possible for you to get through.

1 Peter 5:10

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

Always remember that the trials you are enduring are meant to prepare you for great rewards. Your suffering is not in vain.

James 1:2-3

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

The Holy Spirit is a perfecting tool. God uses it to shape and mold us into the version of ourselves that is most useful to His will. Perseverance is a vital fruit of the spirit for those who truly want to serve. Embrace the struggle, knowing that it is making you a more valuable asset.

Matthew 6:13

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

During your recovery, it's important to remember God on the good days too. Pray continuously to avoid the temptation of relapse and the darkness of uncontrolled addiction.

Let these five Bible verses for recovery bring you closer to God as you regain sanity and begin your new life.
