4 Tips for Working Long Hours at a Call Center

by Rayanne M. Writer

Working long hours at a call center can put a strain on your body and your mind if you are not careful. That is why it's essential to implement habits that will ensure that you improve your work environment as much as possible and stay healthy. The following are four tips that you can use to get through each day you work at the call center. Use these methods to keep your mind, body and soul positive during every shift.

1. Eat Healthy

Eating the right foods and drinking the appropriate liquids can help you to survive your call center job. First and foremost, you must drink enough water. The recommended water intake for adult human beings is eight 8-oz glasses of water every day. You can drink more if your activities are super strenuous, but just drinking the right amount should keep you from dehydrating. Avoiding dehydration will give you the extra energy that you need to do the tasks of a CSR. You may not get many breaks, so you must take the opportunity to get yourself full of water before you go to work at all.

When it comes to foods, you will need to eat items that will boost your metabolism and energy levels rather than give you a full and heavy feeling. Almonds, strawberries, spinach, oatmeal and hummus are examples of foods that will provide you with a nice energy boost and keep you healthy all day long. You should avoid sugary and salty snack foods or too many carbohydrates. Those foods might give you an initial boost, but the crash will be devastating. The goal is to eat foods that will keep your energy steady every day instead of depriving you of your vigor.

2. Get Appropriate Sleep

Sleep is one of the most critical elements of health. You must get the appropriate amount of sleep if you want to survive at a busy call center. Sleep studies have shown that a lack of sleep can cause symptoms such as forgetfulness, irritability, depression, poor dietary decisions and the like. It is very difficult to be a well-performing customer service representative if you're exhibiting those kinds of symptoms. Therefore, you need to ensure that you get the recommended sleep for your age and gender. For example, a 30-year-old man needs seven to eight hours of sleep every day, according to Everyday Health. You might want to unwind a little bit after you get off of work and then make sure that you get to bed at a reasonable time so that you can be fresh the next day.

3. Buy High-Quality Equipment

The equipment that you use can cause you to have a negative experience at work. However, high-quality equipment can make your workdays much easier on you. For example, a quality wireless headset for a call center phone will help you to communicate with your customers better so that you don't have to ask them to repeat themselves. Doing so can cause frustration to develop between the two of you while you're interacting. You could avoid that by investing in a headset that has features that filter out noise and boost clarity. You could also invest in a pillow for your chair or a pad that will give you extra back support while you sit in your chair.

4. Meditate During Breaks

Mediation is another thing you can do to ensure that your day stays nice and calm, even with adversity ringing in your ears. You should meditate several times a day, and the first time should be before you go into work. Find a quiet place to sit down and unite with the heavens and clear your mind for at least two minutes. The next time you should meditate is the first chance you get to go on a break at work. Use the time to meditate if you have additional breaks throughout the day, as well.

Start Taking Care of Yourself Today

The tips mentioned above will help you to keep yourself fit for your duties as a call center agent. You will most likely think of additional methods after you try some of these. The key is always to be proactive about your mental health and comfort. In the end, it will make you a better worker and help you to perform the way your superiors want you to.
