4 Tips for Getting the Best Food Photographs
by Sophia Cruz BUSINESSAs
the name suggests, food photography is the genre that deals with capturing
different food preparations in the most creative and innovative way possible
making the food appear scrumptious. Students pursuing a professional photography course are likely to be introduced with
all about food photography.
The
food photography is actually a collaborative effort that involves a
photographer, an art director, a prop stylist, a food stylist and their other
assistants.
This
genre is originally used for exaggerating the size and the attractiveness of a particular
advertised food, especially fast food. The structure or pattern of food
photography has changed over the last few years. It is now shot in a manner
that the audience or the viewers can relate to, ex- the food is mostly laid out
on a table setting and is captured from the overhead perspective. The food is
usually arranged by the stylists in a manner that appears delicious from the
above and attracts the viewers. After the shot is done, it is then that the
images are given the embellishments of perfect light, colour, shallower angles
etc.
Here
are some Food DSLR photography tips
to consider for great food images –
Shoot in Natural light
Natural
light is one of the major factors that contribute to great still life images.
Choose natural daylight over the artificial light for food photography. The use
of artificial sources of light such as a lamp or a bulb often creates an
unnecessary yellow or orange tone to the image that conceals the beauty of the
food's setting.
Keep the background
neutral
The
background is one of the most important factors that can make or break an image
not only in food photography but all the other forms of photography as well. If
you want the viewers to set their eyes on your subject that is the food as soon
as they see the picture, then keep the background as minimal as possible.
Joining a photography school will
let you learn all the techniques of setting the right background.
Embellish the entire
setting
You
might wonder what to add to the setting that will work as great embellishments
at the same time will not steal the attention of the viewers from the main
subject which is the food preparation itself. Use different coloured spices
such as mustard seeds or cumin seeds and if the recipe is some kind of a
dessert then use dry fruits.
Add the touch of a human element
When you are preparing a setting for your
next food photography, try adding a little touch of some human element such as
a hand stirring the preparation, or fingers sprinkling some spices or stuff for
garnishing, a hand holding a plate or a spoon etc. You can be as creative in
this as you can. This will appear more appealing to the viewers.
