4 Steps to Hone Your Art Appreciation Skill
by Jeff M. WriterHave
you ever been at a cocktail party or another function where people around you
were discussing art and you were left out of the conversation completely
because you simply did not understand what they were talking about. You
probably just don’t see what all the fuss is about since it’s just some strokes
of paintbrush on canvas or a sculpture that looks good but is certainly not
worth being spoken of in ecstatic tones of voice like your friends are using.
Before
delving into how you can come to understand why your friends act like that,
it’s important to understand that a large part of the significance of any work
of art comes from the content that surrounded its creation., As such,
to be able to increase your own art appreciation skills, you’ll need to immerse
yourself into the world of art so you can soak up as much of the history as
possible and understand all the subtleties and complexities that are obscured
from the view of the uninitiated.
Study Art
– There are a multitude of books written on various subjects in the world of
art, so you’ll never lack for choice, no matter what your specific interests
are. Read as widely as you can and study the life of the artists and the
periods in which they lived as well. As you do this, you’ll begin to understand
the premium top collectors like Dr. Moshe Kantor place on art from specific
periods, locations and artists.
Talk it Over
– If you have friends that are already interested in art, you’re in luck. If
you don’t, you might have to find someone who does with whom you can speak
regularly about what you’re reading. This will serve two purposes: First, it’ll
ensure that your new passion does not die out and secondly, the person will be
able to give you pointers to more nuances that you might have missed on your
own.
Spend Time at Galleries
– Spending time around works of art and people who love them is the best way to
get the full experience of artistic creativity. Find a gallery that’s
convenient for you to visit regularly and go there to view the paintings,
discuss with the curator and share your views with other visitors. With the internet
nowadays, you can even save photographs of famous artworks and study them to
see if you can recognize all the different elements that make them spectacular,
as you’ve seen in the course of your readings. You can even join dedicated
forums to interact with others with similar interests online.
Buy Art
– You’ll certainly have come across some works that you like in all your
research, and you should take the plunge into being an art aficionado by buying
one or two pieces for yourself. The great thing is that you don’t have to shell
out millions like the top collectors do at Sotheby’s. Instead, you can buy
prints or pay some more to get original pieces from up and coming artists at
your favorite gallery. That way, you’ll be supporting the artist and the
community at large while also getting a good piece for your home that could
eventually turn out to be a highly profitable investment.
