4 of the Best Design Options for Slim Framed Doors

by Vitrocsa john Webmaster

Architects and designers are always looking for innovative ways to use architectural glazing systems to add a slim and minimal look to glazing. However, there are a number of things to take into consideration when creating slim framed doors other than design, such as performance and the way they open.

We take a look at some of the most popular design options for slim framed doors on the market today.

Ultra Slim Aluminium Frames

For anyone looking for doors with an extremely minimal frame, ultra slim aluminium is a great solution for providing an impressive glass to frame ratio.

In fact, the wider the doors, the slimmer the frame appears. Furthermore, by using aluminium frames, they can be powder coated in almost any colour to match existing windows or to create a contrast against the colour of the building itself.

Doors with Improved Thermal Performance

In some locations, it’s not enough to have good looking doors; you need them to have exceptional thermal performance. In this instance, opting for tripled glazing may be the solution.

Many slimline frames are able to carry triple glazed units and can often accommodate larger than average sized panes. So you’ll not only get the minimal looks, but you’ll get protection from the elements, potential impact and improved sound insulation.

Doors that Disappear

Completely frameless windows created with architectural glass systems give a striking look to any building. However, the downside is that they are a fixed glazing option so only suitable for areas of glass that doesn’t need to open.

However, there are other options which allow large frameless glass panels to disappear into the floor to leave a completely open space connecting the inside and outside.

Steel Look Frames

Steel framed doors can be prohibitively expensive as they’re usually bespoke and handmade although they do give an extremely modern and minimal look.

Fortunately, some manufacturers now offer ‘steel look’ systems which recreate the appearance of steel framed doors but without the big price tag. Made of aluminium, you get all the advantages of aluminium and the look of steel but a much lower price point.

Choosing Your New Slim Framed Doors

These are just a small selection of the options available when looking for slim framed doors, and your final choice will very much depend on what you want to achieve with door, the space available, your personal preference and your budget.

For further advice, you may want to consult with an architect or a supplier that specialises in these kinds of doors, who will be able to give you all the information you need and help you to make your final decision.
