If you've just purchased a new home, one of the first things on your mind is likely how to decorate your new space. Moving can be a challenging experience, and decorating can help to ease some of the stress that comes with making this huge transition. When you add the right colors and design elements to your space, you'll be excited to come home every day and spend time in your new space. You can hire an interior designer to make your home especially attractive. But if you haven't found a designer you like or want to watch your budget as a new homeowner, here are four interior design tips for every new homeowner.

Start With the Bedroom(s)

When you're decorating your home from scratch, you should start with the bedrooms. The bedroom is where you want to feel the most comfortable in your home, so the colors and furniture pieces you select are important. If you want to feel relaxed and tranquil in your bedroom, shades of blue and gray or silver are ideal. You can paint the room in a light shade of blue to make the bedroom appear larger. If you want to feel inspired in your bedroom space, green hues are a wonderful option. If your bedroom area doubles as your office area, green, which is the color of growth, can motivate you to accomplish important tasks. To inspire passion in your bedroom, red, peach, and orange shades are ideal. Muted orange walls and red bedding or furniture makes your bedroom fun and inviting. You can incorporate shades of peach in flower arrangements or bookshelves to complement the walls and create a monochromatic look.

Choose the Right Lighting

Lighting is not usually the first thing you think about when it comes to interior design. However, you need great lighting to make a home feel welcoming and add an air of sophistication.

Make sure you have quality lighting in rooms that you use every day, like the kitchen and the bathroom. A large light in the center or corner of the room can add just the right amount of illumination. If you have decorative pieces you want to showcase, accent lighting on shelves or under cabinets can add a unique touch to the room.

Use "Mixed" Furniture

When you purchase furniture, you don't have to buy an entire set. If you do choose to purchase a set, you don't have to put all the furniture pieces in one room. Mix up the furniture items to showcase your sense of style. For instance, if you buy a sofa, loveseat, and chair, you can place the sofa in the living room, the loveseat in the den, and the chair in your office. Give each room a slightly different color scheme so your home looks uniform but still displays an air of originality.

Add a Splash of Color

One eye-catching element of color in each room makes your new home more interesting. Whether you want to paint an accent wall or choose brightly colored mirrors, shelves, or chairs, the most colorful item in the room will likely be a conversation starter when your friends and family come to visit. For instance, if you want to decorate your office in a black and white theme, choose a desk or chair in cherry red or cobalt blue. If your living room is adorned in neutral jewel tones like gold, silver, or bronze, you can stick with the jewel-toned color scheme by adding wall art or decorative vases in emerald or ruby.

You can also check thrift shops and antique furniture stores to get the pieces you need to complete the design aesthetic for your home. Check out a few shops like this Arkansas furniture boutique to see decorative items in person and get a feel for how certain pieces will look in your home. Making your home especially personal is a great way to decorate as well, so be sure to frame family photos and important documents in decorative or colorful frames. Keep in mind that simple additions like a fresh coat of paint or a signature piece in the room like artwork or a bookshelf can make a huge difference in any room of your new home.
