925 Silver jewelry, or Sterling Silver, is easy to take care of given you use the right cleaning methods instead of falling for cheap and “mythical” ones. As the latter ones do nothing to help your cause of keeping your silver jewellery young but tarnish them instead for the rest of their lives. So it becomes all the more important to resort to the authentic, yet simple, methods that don’t steal away the precious years of your sterling silver necklace; or whatever silver jewellery that you possess. So here are some proven and simple tips that you should consider when the time of “tarnish removal” arrives in the life of your favourite silver jewellery.

1. Aluminium Foil and Baking Soda

The combo of Aluminium foil and Baking soda can prove to a boon if used properly when cleaning your silver at home. Just take a bowl of hot water, its inside already layered with Aluminium foil. Add a tablespoon or two of baking powder. And drop your jewellery in the bowl. Take it out in a minute or three, and rinse properly with cold water at the end.

2. Olive oil and Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains citric acid which proves to be of help in case of sterling silver as it removes the oxidized layer from the jewellery’s surface. Mix half cup lemon juice with 1 tablespoon olive oil in a bowl. Dip a microfiber cloth in the bowl, and gently polish your jewellery. In the end, rinse the jewellery, and let it dry.

3. White Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar is really good to help you remove tarnish of your Silver Jewellery, but a real slow process though. What you need is a bowl and white vinegar. Simply put in your jewellery in the bowl and let it sit there for a two or three hours. You can also choose to add a little baking soda for deeper cleaning action.

3. Beer

Beer ( also known as Isopropyl alcohol), can also be used to clean your sterling silver, and even your gold ones too. All you need to do is to put some Lager (beer conditioned at low temperatures) on a cloth, and simply using that cloth to rub-off the tarnish sitting on your silver sterling; gently.

4. Dish Washing Liquid

Fill a bowl with water and add a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid. Put your sterling silver necklace in the solution and let it sit for good 15-20 minutes. Then gently rub your jewellery with your thumbs.Rinse it with normal water and keep it to dry.

5. Don’t Try These

As important it is to use the right solutions to clean your 925 silver jewellery at home, what’s even more important is to avoid the wrong ones for the same purpose. Use of toothpaste, diet coke (yes, people use this one too), and window cleaners should be avoided at all costs. They might work well with some grades of sterling silver, but they might not work the same magic on your sterling silver. Leaving it with greater tarnish or scratched surface.
