4 Common Plumbing Myths

by Kevin Smith Author

There are many myths about what is good and bad for plumbing, many of which you’ve probably heard. Not only are some of these things unhelpful for your plumbing, but they can also cause damage to your pipes and require the need for professional help. Understanding that these are untrue will save you the hassle of a plumbing repair. Here are four common myths that could cause the need for plumbing services in Pittsburgh, PA.

Hot Water Prevents Grease Clogs

It’s a widely held belief that washing grease down the drain with hot water will prevent a clog as the hot water will melt the grease. It is true that hot water can melt grease, but this won’t stop any potential clogs. While the grease will liquefy and head down the pipes, it will then cool off and solidifies, becoming a catcher of foods, lint, and hair. This will inevitably cause a clog within your pipes. You’re much better off not sending grease down the drain if you can avoid it.

Flushable Baby Wipes

Another common myth is baby wipes can be sent down the drain and easily make their ways through your pipes. Similar to paper towels, it’s not wise to send baby wipes down any drain, including your toilet. This is one of the main causes of clogs in pipes as people believe these items will break down. In fact, the only paper designed to break down when sent down the drain is toilet paper.

Drain Cleaners are Safe

Chemical drain cleaners can sometimes be helpful for clearing partially clogged drains but they should be a last resort. Many drainage pipes are made of plastic and when chemical drain cleaner is used, it heats up which can warp the pipe. It can have a similar effect on older metal pipes. It’s also important not to ever use chemical drain cleaners on entirely blocked pipes as it will get caught up and sit there causing damage to your pipes.

Finding Your Ring

A fear of anyone that wears jewelry is that it will slip off their finger or wrist as they wash their hands and is gone down the drain, never to be seen again. Actually, there is a rather easy way to retrieve your ring should it go down the sink. Simple place a bucket underneath the sink and remove the P-trap, the curved part of the pipe underneath your sink, and the ring will likely be in there. If you don’t find it, a professional plumber should be called to help find the piece of jewelry.

Throughout your life, you’ve likely heard several theories about plumbing. Unfortunately, many of these tend to be false. Knowing that these are myths will help you to avoid the need for plumbing services in Pittsburgh, PA.
