4 Common Mistakes To Avoid When Buying Your First Guitar

by Crisanto Andrada Consultant
I have been playing guitar for seven years, but I was one of those beginners who made some of the mistakes when I purchased my first guitar. I bought a huge guitar, which made it more difficult to play as I was unable to reach the cords properly. It is very natural when you walk into a musical instrument store or check online for the guitar, you are going to be overwhelmed with the different types and different sizes of the guitar, and many beginners fall in this trap and end up buying the wrong guitar. Therefore, I have decided to list four common mistakes for other beginners so that they can avoid while purchasing their first guitar.

Getting The Wrong Size

This is something that a lot of beginners get it wrong in the first instance. In general, electric guitars are smaller than the acoustic guitar, but you need to consider the weight because of all the electric components inside of the musical instrument. Acoustic guitars are large and bulky, which can make it difficult for some people to play. Every individual is different, so you need to consider your arm span and the weight of the musical instrument that you can hold while you are playing.

If you are having difficulty reaching the cords around the neck of the guitar, then the width may be worth considering. If you still cannot find a guitar with a neck that fits your hands, try looking for a model that has a different neck shape.

Getting The Wrong Type

There are many options that you can choose starting from a classical guitar, or acoustic guitar or an electric guitar. Many people prefer to play the acoustic guitar and consider to be that best, but if you want to play like The Beatles or the Pink Floyd, you are going to prefer the electric guitar. If you want to play like Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran an acoustic guitar will be more suitable. A classical guitar is appropriate for children as they have nylon strings, hence they are more comfortable to play. Depending upon your need you have to choose which type of guitar will be suitable for you.

Buying A Guitar With Too Many Features

As a beginner, you are only going to want to learn the basics of playing guitar, which means that you only need a guitar that has the basic features on it. Having too many features is likely to make more complicated. Also, this will help you save money when you purchase your first guitar because guitars with too many features are designed for high-level guitarists that can add quite a few amounts to the price of your first guitar.

Buying A Guitar Without Accessories

When you purchase your first guitar, you are going to need accessories to help you play swiftly and smoothly. Some of the essential accessories to consider include: a pick, a tuner, a guitar strap, an amp, a guitar bag, and a guitar stand.
Take this list into consideration as you start the process of buying your first guitar. Your first guitar is going to be something that you always have a connection, so choose wisely.
