4 Benefits of Becoming a Licensed Electrician

by Education Location Education Location is a free online resource for f

It was once common for electricians to enter the field through formal apprenticeship, a practice still upheld today; however, in order to work in most states an electrician has to be licensed. Holding a license promotes a sense of credibility and safety when electricians present themselves to customers for electrical work. Not only is licensing a requirement in most states, extended licensing certifications such as Journeyman and HVAC opens doors to a broader set of employment opportunities.

Broad Scope of Work
The world’s dependence on electricity grows with each passing year. Homes and businesses could not function without electricity and therefore need electricians to install and maintain the necessary mechanisms for powering their air conditioners, computers, refrigerators, and the vast range of other electronic tools modern society constantly uses. Electricians can specialize in fields such as Hvac and travel the country installing and maintaining heating and air conditioning units for companies or work near home in apartment complexes or on a house-call basis to maintain the electrical supply to people’s homes. Electricians also have the option of working with construction and engineering companies to add electrical wiring to buildings and neighborhoods from the ground up.

Salary

As with any job, the more experience and the better an electrician’s credentials, the higher their salary will be. The median year’s salary for an electrician in 2010 was around $48,000, or $23 an hour. Electricians with licenses,   HVAC training, or electrical engineering courses are more in demand and have opportunities for overtime work and higher wages. Top paid electricians earn between $56,000 and $76,000 annually. In a highly skilled profession such as that of an electrician the more specialties, licensures, and experience a person has the higher the earning potential.
